Round 1
Women’s flyweights kick off festivities at PFL Belfast, as Hackett
(4-3-1, 1-2 PFL) squares off with a promotional newcomer in Vazquez
(8-2, 0-0 PFL) at 125 pounds. Bryan Miner officiates. No glove
touch between the two participants. Hackett claims the center, paws
with her jab and whiffs on an inside leg kick. Slow start through
the first 30 seconds, as they circle each other in the middle of
the cage. Hackett misses on an overhand right. The Aussie feints,
ducks in and out of the pocket and lands with a body kick. Vazquez
not offering much in return. Inside leg kick from Hackett. Vazquez
blocks a head kick and stomps at the lead leg. They exchange right
hands, though neither woman landed cleanly. Outside leg kick from
Hackett, who then slips out of range. Vazquez shields herself from
another high kick. Still not nearly enough output from the PFL
newcomer. Hackett connects with an inside leg kick, switches
stances and decks her opponent with a left hook. She hovers above
Vazquez, avoids an upkick and settles in half guard. Hackett
applies heavy shoulder pressure from the top while mixing in a few
right hands. She climbs to full mount and unleashes punches with
both hands. Miner takes a close look as the round concludes.

Round 2
Off they go for the second round. Hackett paws with the jab, misses
a body kick, resets and switches from southpaw to orthodox. Vazquez
still seems tentative. Hackett blocks a high kick and continues to
lean on her jab. Strong body kick from the Aussie. Vazquez stomps
at the lead leg, then misfires on a body kick. Hackett slowly
crowding her opponent. She jabs the body, connects with a right
hand over the top and clips Vazquez with a left hook. It draws oohs
and aahs from those in attendance. Midway through the round. More
jabs from Hackett, who eats a leg kick and stands her ground.
Vazquez has not landed anything of consequence. Hackett doubles up
on her jab and counters with a left hook. Vazquez lands side kicks
to the lead leg, followed by a straight left to the breadbasket.
Hackett answers with a leg kick, then a front kick to the body.
Thirty seconds to go. Lots of one-way traffic in this one. They
exchange leg kicks. Vazquez flurries in the waning moments but hits
nothing.

Vazquez faces an uphill climb here, and she only has five minutes
left to climb it. Miner beckons them forward. Vazquez counters an
inside leg kick with a left hand over the top. Hackett responds
with a jab and a strong kick to the inner thigh. Vazquez coming up
short on the vast majority of her punches. Hackett doubles up on
left hands and blocks a spinning backfist. Vazquez moves forward
behind a right hand, only to come up empty yet again. More jabs
from Hackett, who ducks the return fire and circles out of danger.
She changes levels and secures a takedown. Vazquez scrambles to her
feet and braces herself along the fence. Hackett fires knees to the
body. Two minutes to go. Vazquez avoids the first trip attempt but
not the second. Hackett drags her to the canvas and moves behind
her. Vazquez gets back to her feet and elbows the thigh. She
retreats to a knee and eats some punches, then stands. Hackett
stays glued to her, drags her to the mat and takes the back, with
hooks. She laces her arms around Vazquez’s head, then steps over to
full mount, battering her opponent with punches while she
stands.

Attention returns to the bantamweight division, where Gauci (10-1,
0-0 PFL) confronts Gittins (13-5, 0-1 PFL) across three rounds at
135 pounds. John McCarthy administers the law and order. Away they
go. Gittins opens with a one-one-two. He then clinches and uncorks
a knee to the body. They separate. Gittins target the body with a
straight right. Gauci answers with an overhand right. Gittins stays
busy with elbows over the top. Gauci lands a front kick to the
body, then goes to the midsection with punches from both hands.
They exchange jabs. Gittins steps forward with a knee. Gauci sneaks
in a right hand, then goes to the body with a left hook. Gittins
the busier of the two participants thus far. He connects with a
left hook to the ribcage. Gauci struggling to answer his pace.
One-twos from Gittins and a front kick to the body. Gauci counters
with a clean counter right hand and drops his counterpart to a
seated position. Gittins gets back to his feet. Gauci digs a left
hook to the body and cuts off an attempted takedown. Multi-strike
volley from Gittins, punctuated by a knee. One minute to go. Gauci
triples up on his left hook, firing two to the body and another to
the head. Gittins continues to let his hands go. He connects with
four punches in a row at one point, including an uppercut. Hooks
from both hands from Gittins, who’s pushing a merciless pace.

Round 2
Gauci drops his opponent with a left hook inside the first 10
seconds. Gittins scrambles to his feet and connects with a right
hook to the body. He lands two elbows in the clinch. Incredible how
quickly Gittins turns the tide. He pins Gauci on the fence with
punches and delivers an elbow on the break. More punches and elbows
from Gittins. Gauci targets the body in response. Gittins zeroes in
on the lower lead leg with a kick and exchanges punches. He lands a
close-range elbow over the top. Spinning back elbow from Gittins,
who briefly loses his balance and stands. Gauci still has no answer
for the volume. Gittins mixes elbows with punches. Gauci sneaks in
a right hand over the top, followed by a left hook to the body.
Neither man willing to cede ground here. Gittins doubles up on his
jab and eats a low kick, then steps into a knee to the body. Gauci
tries to answer back but absorbs two or three shots for every one
he throws. Less than a minute left. They trade at close range.
Gittins connects with hooks to the body from both hands. Gauci
responds with an uppercut. Firefight continues.

Could be scored any which way at this point. McCarthy brings them
forward for more hand-to-hand combat. Gauci takes the center.
Gittins calls upon his venomous mixture of punches and elbows in
tight spaces. Gauci connects with a right hand over the top, covers
up and then gets off two more punches. Nice leg kick from Gittins.
He resets and lets his hands go again. McCarthy pauses the action
to address an issue with one of Gauci’s glove. Back at it. Gittins
bobs and weaves, then ducks into a few punches. Sharp jab from
Gauci, followed by a sneaky left hook. He presses forward into the
clinch, then separates. Gauci fires elbows from both sides, then
follows with an overhand right. They clinch, and Gittins presses
the Aussie into the fence. He throws knees to the inner thigh.
Gauci separates and circles into open space. Three-punch combo from
Gauci. Ninety seconds to go. They trade shots in the center of the
cage. Gauci connects with a right hook to the body. Blood dripping
from Gittin’s face. Gauci lands a solid uppercut and bullies his
way into a takedown. He maintains top position but fails to land
anything of consequence. Nevertheless, Gauci likely salted away
this round.

Action now shifts to a catchweight clash between Bachar (9-3, 0-1
PFL) and Martinez (16-6, 0-0 PFL) at 175 pounds. McCarthy steps in
as the third man in the cage. Martinez gets busy with his lead
hand. Bachar answers with a low kick. Martinez crowds him in the
pocket and punches in combination. He ducks in on the hips, scoops
up Bachar and secures a takedown. Bachar gets back to his feet
without much trouble. Martinez clings to his counterpart and forces
him to carry his weight. He trips Bachar to the floor, takes the
back and threads both hooks. Short punches from Martinez, who loses
one hook, then the other. He disengages and scrambles onto the back
again. Bachar defends his neck. Martinez peppers him with punches
from behind. Ninety seconds to go. Bachar lands a few blind punches
of his own. Martinez rolls to full mount, then secures back control
again. Frustration building for Bachar, who’s off to a rough
start.

They keep the line moving with another catchweight clash between
Carvalho (14-10, 0-2 PFL) and Cossio (19-11-1, 1-2 PFL), this one
at 165 pounds. McCarthy referees the contest. Let the violence
begin. Carvalho takes the center. He slips. Cossio takes top
position and hammers away with punches, then moves to the back.
Carvalho turns into his counterpart’s guard, and they stand
together. He secures the clinch and scores with shoulder strikes.
Carvalho mixes in a few foot stomps and knees to the thigh, then
completes a takedown. Cossio back to his feet and lands an elbow
before turning his opponent into the fence. They trade knees at
close range and separate. Nice body kick from Carvalho, who
clinches. They separate midway through the round. Another body kick
from Carvalho. Cossio clips him with a knee. Carvalho answers with
punches and pressure. He punishes Cossio with an extended burst of
shots. Ninety seconds left. Carvalho clinches, drops in on a
takedown, thinks better of it and breaks. He follows a knee with a
body kick and pushes Cossio into the cage. Stellar start from
Carvalho. He attacks the body with knees and left hooks. Cossio
goes for a takedown. Carvalho grabs the fence and draws a warning
but manages to stay upright.

McCarthy calls them out with his trademark “Let’s get it on!”
Carvalho jabs the body, then goes to the midsection with a heavy
kick. Cossio answers with a low kick and multiple left hooks to the
body. Rolling left hook lands for Carvalho. Sharp one-two from
Cossio. They exchange in the middle of the cage. Blood flowing from
Carvalho’s nose now. He presses forward and connects with punches
from both hands. Carvalho clinches, eats a knee and absorbs a few
elbows. Cossio pulls him into punches and staggers him with a right
hand. He jumps into a guillotine and wraps Carvalho in full guard.
No luck for Cossio, who shrimps to the fence and gets to his feet.
They separate. Sneaky elbows from Cossio. Carvalho counters with a
left hook. He lands a left hand over the top and follows with
knees. Cossio’s right eye swelling rapidly. Carvalho connects with
a right hook and sidesteps a slashing elbow.

Cossio might need a finish here. Carvalho cuts off his forward
progress with leg kicks, resets and loses his mouthpiece. Clubbing
rights from Carvalho after the restart. Cossio breathing heavily.
Carvalho drops in on a single-leg but bails after eating a few
elbows. Left hook from Cossio. Carvalho, fighting through visible
fatigue, lands overhands from both sides. He steps forward with
body kicks and cracks Cossio with a stinging right. Midway through
the round. Carvalho throwing the tighter punches. He follows two
punches with a series of clinch knees and double-leg takedown.
Cossio gets back to his feet but finds himself stuck in the clinch,
losing valuable time. Cossio lands a few knees to the body before
they separate. He lands a front kick to the body and ducks in on a
takedown attempt but decides against it. Cossio threatens the neck
briefly, then lands an elbow. They separate and Carvalho zeroes in
on the body and head. Cossio returns fire and hurts Carvalho to the
body. Carvalho trying to survive. He clinches and exchanges to the
final bell.

greets his counterpart. Clarke feints and circles, allowing Garnett
to control the center. Clarke connects with a right hand to the
body. Garnett doubles up on left hooks, then lands a leg kick.
Clarke answers with a powerful left hook of his own, resets and
then targets the body. Garnett lures in the SBG Ireland rep and
flattens him with a spinning back elbow. Clarke collapses backward,
hits the canvas and eats a few follow-up shots before Miner can
intervene.
