Justin
\nGaethje<\/a>\u2019s recent retirement threat was not all his
\nidea. <\/p>\n

Gaethje (26-5) is scheduled to fight Paddy
\nPimblett<\/a> for the interim lightweight title at UFC 324<\/a>
\non Jan. 24 in Las Vegas. The interim title fight was hatched after
\nchampion Ilia
\nTopuria<\/a> announced a short break from competition for personal
\nreasons. Gaethje and Pimblett (23-3) were previously frontrunners
\nfor a title shot against Topuria. However, Topuria has clearly
\nexpressed his preference for defending his title against Pimblett
\nover Gaethje. Gaethje was threatening retirement if denied a title
\nshot in his next fight. <\/p>\n

Thankfully for Gaethje, circumstances played out in his favor.
\nHowever, Gaethje recently revealed that the retirement threat was
\npartly his manager, Ali Abdelaziz\u2019s idea. Gaethje also admitted
\nthat he was being emotional about the whole situation.<\/p>\n

Taking Things Personally<\/h2>\n

“I definitely got what I asked for,\u201d Gaethje told the UFC. \u201cIt was
\nmore that my manager put me in that. I probably said it \u2014 we’re
\nemotional beings and we’re petty. We don\u2019t get to where I\u2019m at, or
\nwhere these fighters are at, without being petty. I take things
\npersonally, and I thought I earned something. And so I was trying
\nto stand up.”<\/p>\n

Gaethje threatened retirement because he felt that the UFC owed him
\na title shot since he had the promotion\u2019s back on multiple
\noccasions. Abdelaziz also doubled down, claiming Gaethje was likely
\nto follow through with his threat. However, Dana White was unfazed
\nand briefly suggested that Gaethje should probably retire if he was
\nconsidering it. <\/p>\n
