\nthe squeaky wheel gets the grease.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Dan Ige<\/a>\u2014who is
\ncurrently the No. 14 featherweight on the UFC\u2019s Official Rankings<\/a>\u2014posted on
\nsocial
\nmedia<\/a> that he was disallowed to wear red shorts for his
\nupcoming tussle with Melquizael
\nCosta<\/a> at
\nUFC Houston<\/a> in February. According to the Hawaiian, his request
\nfor shorts is limited to the locales he is permitted to
\nrepresent.<\/p>\n

The man once known as \u201cDynamite\u201d posted a segment of a message from
\nUFC or Venum staff, who explained that he is only allowed to
\nrepresent the U.S. or \u201cuniversal,\u201d meaning no country, when he
\nwalks out on Feb. 21. This obstacle hearkens back to the
\nbizarre situation<\/a> that middleweight Anthony
\nHernandez<\/a> faced where he was allegedly forced to prove his
\nfamily lineage to rep Mexico. Ige claimed that the promotion
\ndeclined to let him choose other countries because he did not have
\nhigh enough of a percentage elsewhere from his genealogy study
\nresults.<\/p>\n

\u201cApparently, I can\u2019t wear red shorts (even though I have 3 times in
\nmy 20 UFC fights) for my upcoming fight because USA does not have
\nred. Even though Red symbolizes hardiness and valor in the American
\nflag. And my Ancestry.com results aren\u2019t enough to represent Japan.
\nAnyone know what country camo is? Or pink? Or Orange? [To] Venum:
\nbut I can wear purple???,\u201d Ige wrote<\/a>,
\nslightly edited for clarity.<\/p>\n

The Spirit of the Red, White and Blue<\/h2>\n

Per the image posted by Ige along with his message, he showed that
\nthe promotion is requiring documentation for specific national
\nrepresentation on his shorts. He protested this, considering that
\nas recent as April 2025\u2014when the UFC and Venum had already been
\npartners\u2014he wore red shorts when he faced Sean
\nWoodson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunate, USA does not have Red as an option,\u201d the alleged post
\nfrom the UFC and\/or Venum staff wrote. \u201cIf there isn\u2019t a country
\nthat you can provide documentation for that has red as a fight
\nshort color option. You would have to represent USA or
\nUniversal.\u201d<\/p>\n

It continued, limiting the Hawaiian to just four choices for his
\nnext fight, \u201cUSA fight short color options: Blue\/black\/white.
\nUniversal fight short color options: Purple\/black\/white.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to his 2025 bout with Woodson, Ige previously competed
\nwith red shorts when he collided with Andre Fili<\/a> in
\nFebruary 2024. He also wore the red variety during his 2017
\nappearance on Dana White’s Contender Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The frustrated featherweight has since further commented on this
\nmatter, jokingly asking fellow fighter Jeremy
\nKennedy<\/a> if he could borrow his Canadian passport as those from
\nCanada are currently allowed to wear red shorts. He subsequently
\nagreed that he could \u201ccolor [his] white shorts with the blood of
\n[his] opponent,\u201d as suggested by social media user accelrationrx<\/a>.
\nThe Honolulu native also requested<\/a>
\nthat AI tool Grok create him some custom red shorts with a Hawaiian
\ntheme and his preferred bible verse.<\/p>\n

Since this brouhaha developed on social media, Ige and his team
\nbehind the scenes have been in contact with the promotion. Per “50K,” the situation is now resolved. Hours after his initial posts
\non Thursday, he provided a positive update about his request.<\/p>\n

“Update: I’m getting red shorts,” he wrote<\/a>,
\nalong with a saluting emoji as well as one of the American
\nflag.<\/p>\n
