Daniel
\nCormier<\/a> believes that a particular type of combat sport athlete
\ncan reclaim America\u2019s glory in the
\nUFC<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Cormier (22-3) recently noted that most UFC champions are from
\nEastern Europe with a wrestling base, with the exception of a few
\nstrikers. However, Cormier believes American wrestlers are not
\nopening up to mixed martial arts. Cormier shares a close tie with
\nthe current welterweight champion, Islam
\nMakhachev<\/a>, and former lightweight champ Khabib
\nNurmagomedov<\/a>, who exemplify the dominance of wrestling in MMA.
\nWhile Cormier loves Makhachev, Nurmagomedov, and the rest of the
\nDagestani brigade, he wants to see American champions in the UFC.
\nThe former Olympian claims he has set a plan in motion to bring
\nmore American wrestlers to MMA.<\/p>\n

American Wrestlers Wanted<\/h2>\n

\u201cThe American wrestler isn\u2019t as open to fighting as we need them to
\nbe,\u201d Cormier told Y\u2019all Street TV. \u201cBut I have a plan. I\u2019m getting
\nAmerican wrestlers into fighting. I love those guys. I love Khabib,
\nI love Islam. Those guys are the best. But I want American
\nwrestlers as champions. I think that\u2019s the only group of people to
\ngo and get it back. It\u2019s gonna be the American wrestlers. It\u2019s the
\nEastern European wrestler that\u2019s the champion \u2014 very few strikers,
\nthey\u2019re wrestlers who are champions. We\u2019ve got to get our wrestlers
\ngoing back into the sport of mixed martial arts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. is considered to have an advantage in MMA because the
\nsport was brought to the limelight here by the UFC. The UFC was
\npreviously filled with American champions like Cormier, Jon Jones<\/a>,
\nB.J.
\nPenn<\/a>, Dan
\nHenderson<\/a>, Cain
\nVelasquez<\/a>, Luke
\nRockhold<\/a>, Chris
\nWeidman<\/a> and others, who all hail from a wrestling background.
\nHowever, there is currently no male U.S.-born champion in the
\nUFC.<\/p>\n
