\ntitle rematch against Islam
\nMakhachev<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Makhachev vacated the lightweight title and moved up to
\nwelterweight to challenge Maddalena for the title at UFC 322<\/a>
\nthis past November. There were high expectations from Maddalena
\nafter he dethroned Belal
\nMuhammad<\/a> to win the title in a massive upset at UFC 315.
\nHowever, Makhachev completely dominated Maddalena on the canvas for
\nfive rounds to earn a lopsided unanimous decision win. <\/p>\n

While an immediate rematch was unlikely for Maddalena, UFC 322 also
\nsaw Michael
\nMorales<\/a> and Carlos
\nPrates<\/a> emerge as fresh contenders. Meanwhile, Ian Garry<\/a>
\ndefeated Muhammad a week later at
\nUFC Qatar<\/a> to make a claim for title contention. While Maddalena
\nwants a rematch against Makhachev, the Australian knows that he
\nwill have to get past at least one hungry contender first.<\/p>\n

No Shortcuts<\/h2>\n

\u201cMy goal is obviously to go back,\u201d Maddalena told FightWave. \u201cI
\nwant to get the world title back and also to challenge myself
\nagainst these guys, all those new contenders and really find out
\nwho the best is. I believe I can reign supreme. I\u2019d love to get a
\nshot at Islam again; that\u2019d be the dream. But obviously, he is at a
\ndifferent part of his career. Hopefully, I can get to a point where
\nhe grants me the rematch\u2026 It\u2019s gonna be tough competition in the
\nTop 5, we\u2019re all gonna have to bring our A-game come fight night.
\nBecause there\u2019s a lot of people working hard to get the belt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maddalena (18-3) was riding an 18-fight winning streak with eight
\n
\nUFC<\/a> victories before his loss against Makhachev. Makhachev
\n(28-1) has since been calling for a spot on the UFC White House
\ncard in June. While fans were hoping for a matchup between
\nMakhachev and Ilia
\nTopuria<\/a>, that ship has seemingly sailed for the time being.
\nLightweight champion Topuria will reportedly fight interim champ
\nJustin
\nGaethje<\/a> in a title unifier. Meanwhile, Garry is reportedly the
\nfrontrunner for a welterweight title shot against Makhachev at a
\nlater date. <\/p>\n
