Dricus Du
\nPlessis<\/a> was certain that he would defeat Khamzat
\nChimaev<\/a> until the final seconds of their
\nUFC 319<\/a> clash last year. <\/p>\n

Du Plessis put his middleweight title on the line against Chimaev
\nin the main event at UFC 319 in August 2026. Chimaev dominantly
\ncontrolled \u201cStillknocks\u201d on the ground for nearly 22 minutes out of
\n25 total to earn a unanimous decision victory. <\/p>\n

However, Du Plessis thought he was winning that fight until he
\nheard the final 10-second warning clap. The South African claims
\nthat he was confident that he would either knock out Chimaev or
\nsubmit him in the final round. When Du Plessis was briefly on top
\nof Chimaev in the final round, he says he felt that \u201cBorz\u201d didn\u2019t
\nwant to be there. Du Plessis is still confident that he can beat
\nChimaev in a potential rematch.<\/p>\n

‘He Didn’t Want to Be There Anymore’<\/h2>\n

\u201cHe was not tougher than I expected him to be,\u201d Du Plessis said on
\n“The Ariel Helwani Show.\u201d<\/a> \u201cI was honestly
\nthinking I was winning that fight up until I heard that 10-second
\nclap, and I knew it\u2019s over. When I went out for that last round, I
\nwas 100% certain I was either going to sub this guy or knock him
\nout. When I got that takedown got on top of him, started landing,
\nit was just too little, too late. And I could feel he didn’t want
\nto be there anymore\u2026 I know I can make that man quit.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Chimaev (15-0) controlled Du Plessis (23-3) on the ground, he
\nfaced some backlash for a lack of activity. Du Plessis\u2019 coach,
\nMorne Visser, was even disappointed with referee Marc Goddard<\/a>
\nfor not standing the fighters back up due to inaction. <\/p>\n
