The surging Kyrgyzstani welterweight took another step forward in
\nthe
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a>\u2019s loaded 170-pound weight class
\nwith a three-round unanimous decision over Chris
\nCurtis<\/a> in their featured
\nUFC Fight Night 269<\/a> prelim on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las
\nVegas. Orolbai (16-2-1, 5-1 UFC) swept the scorecards with matching
\n30-27 marks from the cageside judges.<\/p>\n

Curtis (32-13, 6-5 UFC) was a man with no answers. Orolbai closed
\nthe distance and completed one takedown after another, effectively
\nsmothering the former CES MMA champion across 15 non-competitive
\nminutes. Every time Curtis managed to stand, his opponent was there
\nto return him to the mat. Orolbai progressed to the back on
\nmultiple occasions and threatened the neck with rear-naked chokes
\nbut mostly chose to play it safe and dominate the battle with
\nsuperior grappling.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, CM System mainstay Vitor
\nPetrino<\/a> called upon a sharp jab, destructive leg kicks and
\npunishing counters to post a unanimous decision over fellow Dana
\nWhite\u2019s Contender Series graduate Steven
\nAsplund<\/a> in their three-round heavyweight encounter. All three
\njudges turned in 29-28 scorecards for Petrino (14-2, 7-2 UFC).<\/p>\n

A late-notice replacement for Kennedy
\nNzechukwu<\/a>, Asplund (7-2, 1-1 UFC) had the Brazilian reeling
\nlate in the first round. He dazed and dropped Petrino with a
\nthudding left, then swarmed with punches in a bid to finish.
\nPetrino survived and dragged the McCune\u2019s Martial Arts export
\nfurther and further out of his comfort zone. He opened multiple
\ncuts under Asplund\u2019s right eye, bloodied his nose and even sent his
\nmouthpiece flying at one point. Petrino kept his foot on the
\naccelerator down the stretch, connected with hooks to the body and
\nhead, chewed up his opponent\u2019s base with kicks and largely dictated
\nthe terms of their engagement.<\/p>\n

The loss snapped Asplund\u2019s four-fight winning streak.<\/p>\n

Further down the undercard, Team Victory prospect Elijah
\nSmith<\/a> put away \u201cRoad to UFC\u201d Season 3 winner Su Young
\nYou<\/a> with a rear-naked choke in the second round of their
\nbantamweight confrontation.
\nSmith (10-1, 3-0 UFC) drew the curtain 64 seconds into Round
\n2<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You (16-4, 3-1 UFC) neutralized the American with repeated
\ntakedowns in the first round but could not sustain his success over
\nthe long haul. Smith stonewalled an attempted takedown from the
\nex-Deep champion inside the first minute of the middle stanza,
\ndropped him with a clubbing right hand and maneuvered onto his
\nback. Before You could recover, the choke was in place. Smith
\nreadjusted his grip, constricted around the neck and prompted the
\ntapout.<\/p>\n

Smith now finds himself on an eight-fight winning streak.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, promotional newcomer Manoel
\nSousa<\/a> punched out former Atomic Fighting Championship
\ntitleholder Bolaji Oki<\/a>
\nin the third round of their lightweight affair.
\nOki (10-4, 2-3 UFC) clocked out 4:12 into Round 3, losing for the
\nthird time in four outings<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sousa (14-1, 1-0 UFC) flirted with a finish in the first round,
\nwhere he decked the Valon Team product with a right hand over the
\ntop and pounced with follow-up punches. Oki regained his faculties
\non the ground, escaped to his feet, secured a takedown and managed
\nto have point himself in the right direction ahead of the middle
\nstanza. There, he called upon knees to the body, straight left
\nhands and strong clinch work to effectively turn the tide. However,
\nSousa found his second wind in the third, battered his adversary
\nwith body-head combinations and set the stage for the stoppage with
\na clean one-two. He stalked a backpedaling Oki in the final minute
\nof the fight and leveled him with a crushing straight right hand.
\nNo other shots were required.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old Sousa has rattled off three consecutive
\nvictories.<\/p>\n

Finally, 10-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Beatriz
\nMesquita<\/a> kept her perfect professional record intact, as she
\ndispatched Montserrat
\nRendon<\/a> with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their
\nwomen\u2019s bantamweight affair.
\nMesquita (7-0, 2-0 UFC) brought it to a close 2:07 into Round
\n1<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rendon (7-2, 2-2 UFC) never stood a chance. Mesquita staggered the
\nECR Fight Center rep with a counter right hand, swarmed with
\npunches and elbows, powered into top position and executed a
\ntakedown after her opponent briefly returned to her feet. She
\nsettled in side control, climbed to full mount and assaulted Rendon
\nwith punches, hammerfists and elbows. Mesquita then progressed to
\nthe back, weaved her arms around the Invicta Fight Championships
\nalum\u2019s neck and let her world-class squeeze do the rest.<\/p>\n

Mesquita, 36, has finished six of her first seven opponents, three
\nof them inside one round.<\/p>\n

In other action, Eryk Anders<\/a>
\n(18-9, 10-9 UFC) laid claim to a unanimous decision\u201430-27, 29-28,
\n29-28\u2014over Brad
\nTavares<\/a> (21-12, 16-12 UFC) in their three-round middleweight
\nclash and subsequently announced his retirement from MMA; Hecher Sosa<\/a>
\n(14-1, 1-0 UFC) filled in for Rinya
\nNakamura<\/a> and took a unanimous decision from Luan
\nLacerda<\/a> (13-4, 1-3 UFC) in their three-round bantamweight tilt,
\nas he earned 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 marks from the judges; and
\nPiera
\nRodriguez<\/a> (12-2, 5-2 UFC) improved to 2-0 in her head-to-head
\nseries against Sam Hughes<\/a>
\n(11-7, 6-6 UFC) with a three-round unanimous decision\u201430-27, 30-27,
