This seemingly insignificant detail will be crucial in the
\noperation of the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a>\u2019s fight card at the White
\nHouse.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the promotion
\nencountered<\/a> a major regulatory snafu when the District of
\nColumbia Combat Sports Commission weighed in on the fight card. As
\nthe
\nUFC White House: Freedom 250<\/a> event is to be held on federal
\nland and not under a state\u2019s jurisdiction, the UFC can technically
\nserve as its own commission in running it\u2014a la the upcoming
\n
\nUFC Macau<\/a> show, for example.<\/p>\n

The drama all came down to a $100 permit that at the time the UFC
\nwas refusing to acquire. The D.C. commission and its head, Andrew
\nHuff, stated that any fight card run without this permit would be
\nconsidered unsanctioned and may not be eligible for records. Huff\u2019s
\noverarching concern is that any other event would receive this same
\npermit that would allow the commission to be involved in the
\nregulatory process, including the use of commission medical
\nstaff.<\/p>\n

This came to a close on Thursday, when the promotion announced<\/a>
\nalongside the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) that the UFC
\nwould use this regulatory entity to serve as an independent third
\nparty to operate the card. Under this agreement, the Las
\nVegas-based organization will work with the ABC to select the
\nofficiating crew of referees, judges and the like. Additionally, it
\nwill collaborate with the ABC for the medical examinations of the
\nathletes before, during and after the event.<\/p>\n

Dotting the T\u2019s and Crossing the I\u2019s<\/h2>\n

The President of the ABC, Timothy Shipman, expressed relief that
\nthe UFC was able to come to terms with a sanctioning body to
\nprovide independent oversight over this historic show. In a
\nstatement, he revealed some of what the ABC would be involved in
\nregarding Freedom 250.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the event is being held on federal property, there is no
\nrequirement for the UFC to select a state athletic commission to
\noversee the event,\u201d Shipman wrote. \u201cThe UFC expresses its
\ncommitment to ensuring that this event is among the most thoroughly
\nregulated in the history of the sport and has requested that the
\nABC serve as an independent third party to assist in assembling the
\nmost qualified group of judges, referees, and inspectors in the
\nworld. The UFC has further confirmed that it will abide by all
\napplicable regulatory requirements in support of this event,
\nincluding all required medical examinations, pre-bout and post-bout
\nphysicals, and athlete safety protocols. All bouts on this card are
\nofficially licensed and sanctioned contests.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ABC will work alongside the UFC\u2019s Chief Business Officer,
\nHunter Campbell, as well as former regulator and currently Senior
\nVice President of the UFC\u2019s Government and Regulatory Affairs
\ndepartment, Marc Ratner. The latter also put out a brief statement
\nsignaling his involvement in the matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cUFC is the gold standard for athlete health and safety in combat
\nsports\u2014bar none,\u201d Ratner wrote, \u201cand we will absolutely bring those
\nsame industry leading standards to this incredible, unique event at
\nthe White House. We thank the Association of Boxing Commissions for
\nlending their expertise to ensure the highest standards of
\ncompetitive integrity and professional governance to a truly
\nunprecedented stage for MMA.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UFC White House event will go down on June 14 with a pair of
\nchampionships atop the six-fight billing. The men in the marquee
\nwill fight to unify the lightweight strap, as champ Ilia
\nTopuria<\/a> battles interim beltholder Justin
\nGaethje<\/a>. In the co-main attraction, Alex
\nPereira<\/a> moves up to heavyweight in search of his third
\ndivisional strap, and he will face ex-interim titlist Ciryl Gane<\/a>.
\nThe remainder of the lineup will see Sean
\nO’Malley<\/a> take on Aiemann
\nZahabi<\/a> at bantamweight; Mauricio
\nRuffy<\/a> will throw down with Michael
\nChandler<\/a> in a 155-pound showcase affair; Bo Nickal<\/a> and
\nKyle
\nDaukaus<\/a> meet at middleweight; the event will kick off with a
\nfeatherweight banger when Diego Lopes<\/a>
\nfaces Steve
\nGarcia<\/a>.<\/p>\n
