Barring something funky on fight night, one of these two
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> athletes will shed a losing
\nstreak at night\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

The UFC announced<\/a> the
\nreturn of former Rizin Fighting Federation<\/a> champion Kai Asakura<\/a>
\n(21-6) on Thursday, who will be moving back up to 135 pounds after
\nsuffering two defeats in the Octagon. He draws fellow skidding
\ncombatant Cameron
\nSmotherman<\/a> (12-6), who won his promotional debut and has since
\ndropped two decisions. The latter may be
\nmore famously known<\/a> as the one who made weight ahead of his UFC
\n324 match with Ricky
\nTurcios<\/a>, only to faint and faceplant shortly after walking off
\nthe scales.<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s Asakura, 32, has not panned out since debuting with the
\npromotion in 2024. Coming off winning the Rizin bantamweight belt
\nagainst Juan
\nArchuleta<\/a> at the end of 2023\u2014where Archuleta missed weight by
\nover five pounds on fight night\u2014Asakura was thrust into an
\nimmediate title shot. Champ Alexandre
\nPantoja<\/a> throttled him in just over seven minutes, rendering the
\nRings: Outsider expat unconscious for the first submission defeat
\nof his career. After over nine months away, Asakura came back
\nagainst Tim Elliott<\/a>,
\nonly to get submitted again. This prompted a relocation to
\nbantamweight, a division he previously competed at from 2018 to
\n2023.<\/p>\n

The two will collide at
\nUFC Macau<\/a>, also known as UFC Fight Night 277, which goes down
\non May 30 at the Galaxy Arena in Macau, a special administrative
\nregion in China. It will mark the first time that Houstonian
\nSmotherman has competed outside of the U.S. in his 18-fight career,
\nwith the lion\u2019s share previously taking place in his home state of
\nTexas. Smotherman picked up a win over Jake Hadley<\/a>
\nwhen he debuted in 2024, as his appearance on the 2023 season of
\nDana White’s Contender Series<\/a> did not go his
\nway. He went on to rattle off three wins in Fury Fighting Championship<\/a> to reach the Las
\nVegas-based league, and has since fallen short on the scorecards to
\nSerhiy
\nSidey<\/a> and Ricky Simon<\/a>
\nin 2025.<\/p>\n
