Shortly after defeating Kevin Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThis is my first time in Mexican jail and I can tell you one thing \u201cI think the worst part about the whole thing was the food. I felt Of course, Rodriguez didn\u2019t expect to be behind bars for as long as “The whole judicial system in Mexico is a different world,” Rodriguez revealed that he had \u201cfriends in high places\u201d and didn\u2019t \u201cMy first court date, one of the guards recognized me and started \u201c\u2026Over there it\u2019s not like out here. I\u2019ve been in jail over here Rodriguez will return to the UFC with a three-fight winning streak
\nUFC<\/a> welterweight Daniel
\nRodriguez<\/a> paid dearly for attempting to take marijuana into
\nMexico.<\/p>\n
\nHolland<\/a> at
\nUFC 318<\/a> last July, Rodriguez planned a vacation to Rosarito,
\nMexico, to celebrate his victory. However, \u201cD-Rod\u201d was arrested at
\nthe U.S.-Mexico border for possession of weed, and he ended up
\nspending the past eight months in Mexican prison. The 39-year-old
\nCalifornian was finally released last week. During an appearance on
\n“The Ariel Helwani Show,\u201d<\/a> Rodriguez detailed his
\nexperience.<\/p>\n
\nfor sure, it\u2019s the worst possible situation,\u201d Rodriguez said.
\n\u201cFortunately, I was able to make the best of it. I was able to pull
\na couple of strings and get a little bit of workout equipment there
\nand I was able to work out and try and stay in shape, but it\u2019s not
\nthe same. We only went to yard twice a week and those days were the
\nonly days I would get to run. I spent the whole time running, I
\nprobably looked like a crazy ass dude out there just running laps
\nand laps and laps and laps, but it was only twice a week.<\/p>\n
\na little bit unhealthy, a little malnourished. I think that was the
\ntoughest part, is the nutrition. I was coming off that big fight
\nand my body was healthy and the best shape ever, and then to be
\nthrown and locked in a jail cell and just put in one spot and just
\ngetting the bare minimum food to eat, it was terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nhe was.<\/p>\n
\nRodriguez said. “They didn’t have a sense of urgency to move my
\ncase forward. It took so long, man. There were so many ups and
\ndowns. I went to a few court days. I thought I was getting out, and
\nI didn’t end up getting out. Honestly, I was looking at probably
\ngetting out until late June or July. Luckily, I got an amazing
\nlegal team, and we were able to work some things out, but there’s a
\nwhole bunch of requirements and stuff behind it I have to stick
\nto.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nencounter any serious trouble while doing time. It didn\u2019t hurt that
\nhe was recognized for his exploits in the UFC. Still, even with
\nfavored status, the experience was different than spending time in
\njail in the U.S.<\/p>\nVIP Status?<\/h2>\n
\nasking me for pictures,\u201d Rodriguez said. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018What the
\nhell?\u2019 So all the guards are right there taking pictures. Some of
\nthe inmates saw that and one inmate asked, \u2018What\u2019s up with you?\u2019
\nand this and that. I didn\u2019t really want to say anything. In a
\nsituation like that, you want to keep the lowest profile, because
\nme being who I am, it\u2019s kind of like a target on my back. People
\nare going to want to test you, you never know. So I was just
\nwanting to keep a low profile.<\/p>\n
\nwhere there\u2019s like the L.A. county jail, where it\u2019s not \u2018prison\u2019
\nprison. But over there, they throw you straight in, it\u2019s straight
\ninto prison and my first, like, 12 days there I was in a six-man
\ncell with, like, 25 people in there. Dudes sleeping on the floor,
\ntwo men per bunk, and I couldn\u2019t even sleep. It was just disgusting
\nin there, it\u2019s horrible. The most horrible situation you can think
\nof. Fortunately, word got around that I was in there and I got shot
\nup to the VIP section, so I was fortunate enough to get some love.
\nYeah, they did show me a lot of love, in the back of my mind I kind
\nof had a sense like, I think this guy\u2019s using me as protection. I\u2019m
\nkind of like his bodyguard or some shit, but I just ran with
\nit.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nthat includes victories over Holland, Santiago
\nPonzinibbio<\/a> and Alex Morono<\/a>.
\nNow that he\u2019s a free man again, Rodriguez wants to keep the
\nmomentum going.<\/p>\n
