If anyone knows just how bad
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> light heavyweight champ Carlos
\nUlberg<\/a>\u2019s injury is, it is someone who is going through the same
\nthing.<\/p>\n

The newly minted 205-pound king Ulberg starred in one of the most
\nremarkable and improbable scenes in recent memory when he sustained
\na major injury to his knee in his championship bout atop UFC 327.
\nWhat very well could be a serious ligament rupture was no reason
\nfor Ulberg to quit the fight, as he continued fighting and managed
\nto knock out Jiri
\nProchazka<\/a> to claim the vacant belt. His timetable for recovery
\nis currently unknown, but he has already completed surgery, posting
\nabout it on Thursday on his Instagram
\nStories<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ulberg is far from the only top-tier fighter to go through this,
\nand not even the lone combatant to blow out his knee recently.
\nFormer lightweight champion Rafael dos
\nAnjos<\/a> ruptured his ACL in his last outing, succumbing to the
\nknee injury 90 seconds into his UFC 308 contest with Geoff Neal<\/a> in
\n2024. On Wednesday, Sherdog spoke with this former champ who
\nappears to have suffered the same injury as Ulberg. \u201cRDA\u201d has not
\nyet been cleared to compete again, and he provided a bit of
\ninformation on the process, what he went through and what Ulberg
\nmay face going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf everything goes well with Ulberg, he\u2019ll be back in nine months
\nto a year,\u201d dos Anjos identified. \u201cAfter ACL surgery, you only can
\nstart doing some activity after six months. Being cleared to start
\ntraining around nine months, until he gets in shape and can fight,
\ntakes a year. But thank God, Ulberg is in a great scenario to
\nrecover. After all, with the belt around his waist, everything is
\neasier.\u201d<\/p>\n

The extended layoff for dos Anjos is hardly common, as he has not
\nfought since that October night nearly 18 months ago. His
\nsituation, he claims was exacerbated in part due to incorrect
\ndecisions made by his attending doctors on at least two
\noccasions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn October 2024, when I kicked Neal, I tore my cruciate ligament
\nand meniscus,\u201d the former champ explained. \u201cI went to Brazil, had
\nthe surgery on my ACL ligament, and my doctor made the unfortunate
\ndecision to suture my meniscus, something that is normally only
\nadvisable for children and young people, not for a 40-year-old
\nprofessional athlete. I went back to training, and in May 2025, my
\nknee started to lock up and the suture tore.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThen I had another surgery in Austin, which
\ntheoretically should have been much simpler, but the doctor forgot
\nthe stitches inside my knee. Six months passed and my knee was
\nalways swollen, so I went back to Brazil, my doctor found out what
\nit was, and I had another surgery. Now, three months after this
\nthird surgery, I can already see that my knee is fully recovering.
\nI\u2019m doing more work to recover the muscles in my left thigh, which
\nhave atrophied.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m missing the Octagon\u201d<\/h2>\n

Barring anything else strange on his end, the 41-year-old plans on
\nreturning to the Octagon in July or August of this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still have four fights on my contract and I would like to do at
\nleast two more, because I still have the desire to fight and I\u2019m
\nmissing the Octagon,\u201d revealed the Brazilian.<\/p>\n

Aiming to make his 50th professional start, the well-traveled dos
\nAnjos has faced many of the biggest names in the sport across two
\ndivisions. In his primary weight category, the one in which he
\nhoisted gold, he picked up that throne by pounding Anthony
\nPettis<\/a>. Other key victories at lightweight for \u201cRDA\u201d include a
\npair of triumphs over Donald
\nCerrone<\/a>, while also having beaten names like Benson
\nHenderson<\/a>, Nate Diaz<\/a> and
\nPaul
\nFelder<\/a> over the years. In his higher division of 170 pounds, he
\ncelebrates wins over talents like Robbie
\nLawler<\/a>, Neil Magny<\/a>
\nand Kevin
\nLee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While finalizing his recovery process from his left knee, \u201cRDA\u201d is
\nopening his first academy in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took advantage of these injuries to focus on my business,\u201d he
\nadmitted. \u201cSince I was eight years old, I\u2019ve been involved with
\njiu-jitsu, so it wouldn\u2019t make sense to open a restaurant or a
\ncoffee bar. After all, I want to pass on what I know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why Texas, he was asked, as he has lived in California for much his
\nlife since departing Brazil.<\/p>\n

\u201cTexas is a very special place for me. My first UFC victory was in
\nHouston, and I won my belt in Dallas. I found a space here in
\nAustin with 4,000 square feet. We will have jiu-jitsu, MMA and
\nkickboxing classes here. Thank God we\u2019ve already had a huge demand,
\nand many people have already purchased a membership. We should open
\nby June,\u201d dos Anjos concluded.<\/p>\n
