Burns recently recalled a heartbreaking phone call with his mother.
\nBurns couldn\u2019t even pay his own rent when he suffered a bout of
\nbronchitis. \u201cDurinho\u201d called his mother, planning to ask her for
\nsome money to buy medicines. Burns didn\u2019t want to ask for money
\nright away and had a lengthy conversation with his mother. However,
\nit was Burns\u2019 mother who ended up asking for his help instead.
\nBurns promised her that while he didn\u2019t have any money then, he
\nwould send some soon. The Brazilian remembers telling himself after
\nthe incident that he didn\u2019t have any choice other than becoming
\nsuccessful in life.<\/p>\n

I Have to Make It Happen<\/h2>\n

\u2028 \u201cMy rent would be like $7-8 a month, that I didn\u2019t have to pay. I
\nhave guys helping out, paying my rent,\u201d Burns said in a recent
\ninterview (via Home of Fight). \u201cThat week I was having bronchitis,
\nI was gonna call my mom just to see if she had money for medicine
\nto help me out. When I called her, I talked to her for a long time.
\nI\u2019m not gonna ask for money right away\u2026 When we started talking,
\nshe asked if I had any money to send to her. And I told her, \u2018I
\ndon\u2019t right now. But I\u2019m gonna send it to you pretty soon.\u2019… It
\nwas very hard. I\u2019m remember talking to myself and saying, \u2018I\u2019m
\ngonna make it happen. I gotta make it happen, I have to make it
\nhappen.\u2019 And I remember just going crazy in training.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burns (22-10) went on to have a stellar MMA career. Burns fought
\nthe who\u2019s who of the
\nUFC<\/a> welterweight division in his tenure in the promotion,
\nspanning over more than a decade, even unsuccessfully challenging
\nformer teammate Kamaru
\nUsman<\/a> for the title in 2021. The 39-year-old finally hung up
\nhis gloves last weekend following a stoppage loss against Mike Malott<\/a>
\nat UFC
\nWinnipeg<\/a>. <\/p>\n
