The
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> welterweight division has a new
\ncontender. Brazilian knockout artist Carlos
\nPrates<\/a> entered hostile territory and walked away with an
\nimpressive stoppage victory tonight at
\nUFC Fight Night 275<\/a> in Perth, Western Australia. Prates
\nmethodically wore down recent UFC title challenger Jack
\nDella Maddalena<\/a> en route to a third-round TKO stoppage in the
\nnight\u2019s featured main event.<\/p>\n

Prates (24-7, 7-1 UFC) kept his hands low in the opening round and
\nalternated between landing punches to Della Maddalena\u2019s (18-4, 8-2
\nUFC) face and kicks to his lead leg. Della Maddalena was eventually
\nable to score a takedown, but not before eating two knees to the
\nface, and he was unable to put Prates in danger on the ground. In
\nthe second round, Prates landed more knees and punches early on. He
\neventually hurt Della Maddalena with another knee and a head kick,
\nand swarmed on him with punches. Della Maddalena showed his resolve
\nand fought on, but Prates knocked him down one more time with a
\nchopping leg kick before the bell and that had Della Maddalena in
\nvisible pain.<\/p>\n

Seconds into the third round, Prates cut Della Maddalena on his
\nforehead with a knee and he continued his assault with two
\nknockdowns; first from a head kick and then from a one-two
\ncombination. Della Maddalena stood up, but Prates sent him back
\ndown to the mat with another leg kick. He repeatedly kicked the
\ndowned Della Maddalena\u2019s leg before following up
\nwith a series of elbows<\/a> that prompted referee Mike Beltran to
\nwave off the fight at the 3:17 mark of Round 3.<\/p>\n

Della Maddalena, who had won 18 straight fights before losing his
\nUFC title bid to Islam
\nMakhachev<\/a> in November, now finds himself on a two-fight losing
\nstreak for the first time since he began his pro career with two
\ndefeats. Prates, meanwhile, has knocked out his opponents in all
\nseven UFC victories. The popular Brazilian is now one of the
\nfastest rising stars in the welterweight division, and tonight\u2019s
\ndismantling of Della Maddalena was arguably even more impressive
\nthan his previous knockout of Leon
\nEdwards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Salkilld shocks Dariush<\/h2>\n

In the lightweight co-main event, hometown star Quillan
\nSalkilld<\/a> (12-1, 5-0 UFC) weathered an early storm from Beneil
\nDariush<\/a> (23-8-1, 17-8-1 UFC) and finished the veteran with
\npunches in the first round. Dariush rocked Salkilld with a lead
\nleft hand early in the fight and he maintained a standing back
\nclinch until Salkilld eventually broke free. Seconds later,
\nSalkilld charged at Dariush with looping lefts and rights. He
\ndropped Dariush and
\nlanded two more punches on the ground<\/a> for an impressive TKO
\nstoppage at the 3:29 mark of Round 1. With the key win, Salkilld
\nshould now crack the top 15 in the competitive lightweight
\nrankings. He has not lost a fight since his February 2021 pro
\ndebut.<\/p>\n

Erceg outstrikes Elliott<\/h2>\n

Former flyweight title challenger Steve Erceg<\/a>
\n(14-4, 5-3 UFC) moved closer to championship contention with a
\nwell-deserved unanimous decision victory over Tim Elliott<\/a>
\n(21-14-1, 10-12) in a spirited bout. Erceg employed a similar
\nstrategy in all three rounds and he used crisp jabs to set up right
\nhands that repeatedly landed on Elliott\u2019s jaw. For his part,
\nElliott used stance switches to land left hooks and he got a
\ntakedown into side control in the opening round. From then on,
\nErceg\u2019s boxing was too much for the veteran “The Ultimate Fighter”
\nwinner, and he even took Elliott down into back control at one
\npoint. Erceg\u2019s technical boxing gave him an advantage in the
\nstriking exchanges during the final round and all three judges
\nscored the bout 29-28 in his favor. He has won back-to-back UFC
\nbouts since suffering a three-fight losing skid that dropped him
\nout of the title hunt.<\/p>\n

Rahiki steamrolls Schmid<\/h2>\n

As expected, Marwan
\nRahiki<\/a> (9-0, 2-0 UFC) faced very little resistance in his
\nfirst-round TKO victory over late replacement Oliver
\nSchmid<\/a> (4-3, 0-1 UFC) at featherweight. Rahiki opened the
\naction with front kicks to Schmid\u2019s body early on and then
\nestablished his boxing. He backed Schmid up with a combination and
\nthen floored him with an uppercut. As a dazed Schmid covered up,
\nRahiki
\nlanded more punches until the bout was stopped<\/a> at the 2:47 mark
\nof the opening round.<\/p>\n

Pericic punishes Gaziev<\/h2>\n

Unlike the heavyweight bout that preceded it, the battle between
\nBrando
\nPericic<\/a> (7-1, 3-0 UFC) and Shamil
\nGaziev<\/a> (14-3, 3-3 UFC) was a thrilling one for as long as it
\nlasted. Pericic rocked Gaziev with punches in the first round, but
\nGaziev tied him up in a clinch and recovered. The fighters were
\nseparated and Gaziev hurt Pericic with an uppercut and a right
\nhook. In the second round, Pericic snapped Gaziev\u2019s head back with
\na pair of left-right combos and both men unloaded with big shots as
\nthey sought a finish. Pericic connected with a right hand that left
\nGaziev dazed, and he sent him
\ncrashing to the mat with a final uppercut<\/a> for a knockout win at
\nthe 3:44 mark of Round 2. Pericic has knocked out five opponents in
\na row.<\/p>\n

Sutherland smothers Tuivasa<\/h2>\n

Opening up the main card, Louie
\nSutherland<\/a> (11-5, 1-2 UFC) made the most of a short-notice
\nopportunity and easily won his heavyweight duel against Tai Tuivasa<\/a>
\n(14-10, 8-10 UFC), who has now dropped seven straight fights and
\nmounted almost no offense at all tonight. Sutherland wisely took
\nthe fight to the ground in all three rounds, where he struck from
\nthe top in Tuivasa\u2019s half-guard, in side control and in mount.
\nTuivasa did defend well by limiting the damage that Sutherland
\ncould inflict, but he didn\u2019t do much else. Late in the final round,
\nTuivasa was gifted with a standup from referee Rich
\nMitchell<\/a>. However, that did not help him, as Sutherland got
\nTuivasa down again and Tuivasa lost a point for an illegal knee.
\nAll three judges scored the fight 30-26 in favor of Sutherland for
\na unanimous decision victory that would seemingly, finally, spell
\nthe end of Tuivasa\u2019s UFC career. For his part, Sutherland fought
\nwell on two weeks\u2019 notice.<\/p>\n

Rowston dominates Bryczek<\/h2>\n

Capping off the preliminary card, Cameron
\nRowston<\/a> (15-3, 3-0 UFC) dominated Robert
\nBryczek<\/a> (18-7, 1-2 UFC) on the ground for three rounds and
\ncruised to an easy unanimous decision win at middleweight.
\nBryczek\u2019s lone moment of success came in the first round when he
\nlanded a hard flurry of punches to Rowston\u2019s midsection, but
\nRowston immediately took him down and battered him with punches and
\nelbows. He put Bryczek on the mat and landed more strikes in the
\nsecond round. After being taken down again in round three, Bryczek
\nrolled for a kneebar attempt, but that allowed Rowston to take top
\nposition in side control and later in mount. He bloodied Bryczek
\nwith elbows just before the final bell, and all three judges scored
\nthe fight 30-27 for Rowston.<\/p>\n

Tafa KOs Christian<\/h2>\n

Facing a must-win situation, Junior Tafa<\/a>
\n(7-5, 3-5 UFC) ended a two-fight losing skid in a big way by
\nbrutally knocking out Kevin
\nChristian<\/a> (9-4, 0-2 UFC) in the first round of their light
\nheavyweight bout. Tafa went headhunting right away with punches,
\nbut Christian hurt him with a hard calf kick. Tafa recovered and he
\nstunned Christian with a combination. Christian fell to the mat and
\nTafa
\npounced on him with vicious elbows<\/a> that dribbled Christian\u2019s
\nhead off of the canvas and rendered him unconscious at the 2:42
\nmark of Round 1.<\/p>\n

Malkoun defeats overweight Meerschaert<\/h2>\n

In a would-be middleweight bout that became a 190-pound catchweight
\ncontest, Jacob
\nMalkoun<\/a> (10-3, 6-3 UFC) overcame submission attempts from an
\noverweight Gerald
\nMeerschaert<\/a> (37-22, 12-14 UFC) and escaped with a unanimous
\ndecision win. Meerschaert pulled half-guard with a guillotine choke
\nand used it to sweep into top position in the first round, where he
\nstayed throughout. The second round was mostly uneventful and saw
\nneither man commit to any sustained offense on the feet. Malkoun
\njabbed and landed a few right hooks in the final round, but
\nMeerschaert pulled guard and swept into a mounted guillotine choke.
\nMalkoun held on until the bell and all three judges scored the
\nlackluster fight 29-28 in his favor.<\/p>\n

Thicknesse decisions Morales<\/h2>\n

Colby
\nThicknesse<\/a> (9-1, 2-1 UFC) survived a scare late in his
\nbantamweight fight against veteran Vince
\nMorales<\/a> (16-11, 3-9 UFC) and eked out a unanimous decision
\nvictory. Thicknesse had Morales in all sorts of trouble in the
\nfirst round by chaining together a guillotine choke, triangle choke
\nand armbar, but Morales escaped each time and he kept the fight on
\nthe feet in the second round. Morales jabbed and Thicknesse
\nanswered back with body kicks. The final round was dominated by
\nMorales, who badly hurt Thicknesse with a right hook and uppercut
\ncombo. Thicknesse dove at Morales\u2019s legs and Morales held back
\ncontrol as time ticked down. The fight went to the scorecards and
\nall three judges had it 29-28 for Thicknesse.<\/p>\n

Schultz guillotines Johnston<\/h2>\n

Persistence paid off for Wesley
\nSchultz<\/a> (9-3, 1-1 UFC) in his middleweight duel against
\nBen
\nJohnston<\/a> (5-2, 0-1 UFC). After multiple failed takedown
\nattempts in the opening two rounds, Schultz was punished with
\nelbows to his face as Johnston racked up control time on top.
\nSchultz pulled guard with a tight guillotine choke in the final
\nround and Johnston escaped once. He could not escape
\nfrom a second guillotine<\/a>, however, and Schultz finally forced
\nJohnston to tap out at the 1:50 mark of Round 3 for a comeback
\nwin.<\/p>\n

Micallef edges Gorimbo<\/h2>\n

Welterweight prospect Jonathan
\nMicallef<\/a> (10-1, 3-0 UFC) extended his winning streak to five
\nwith a hard-fought split decision victory over Themba
\nGorimbo<\/a> (14-7, 4-4 UFC), who faded after a strong start.
\nFollowing a back-and-forth opening round, Gorimbo took Micallef\u2019s
\nback and trapped him in a body triangle during the second stanza.
\nMicallef dominated the final round, however, and he scored with
\nnumerous body kicks and a spinning backfist. One judge scored the
\nbout 29-28 in favor of Gorimbo, while the remaining two both had it
\n29-28 for Micallef.<\/p>\n

Steele heel hooks Mar Fan<\/h2>\n

Opening up the card, Kody Steele<\/a>
\n(8-1, 1-1 UFC) spoiled the official UFC debut of RTU Season 4
\nwinner Dom Mar Fan<\/a>
\n(9-3, 0-1 UFC) at lightweight. Steele took Mar Fan down in the
\nopening minute and briefly held mount before a scramble led to
\nSteele
\nlocking on an inverted heel hook<\/a> for the tap at the 3:56 mark
