\nhit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving
\nforward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Philipe
\nLins<\/a> is like that. A native of Brazil\u2019s arid northeast, the now
\n40-year-old is mere days away from the most important fight of his
\ncareer — facing Francis
\nNgannou<\/a> on Netflix at
\nMost Valuable Promotions<\/a>\u2019s inaugural card.<\/p>\n

In his native Portuguese, Lins shared some of the challenges as
\nwell as the stubborn drive that brought him to this pivotal
\nmoment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had an excellent start to my MMA career in Brazil. I went 7-0
\nthere. That\u2019s when I caught the attention of my first international
\nMMA organization — Bellator. I debuted there in 2014. At Bellator,
\nI went 3-3. It wasn\u2019t great, but I was able to show my talent,
\nskills and aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nMMA<\/a> couldn\u2019t have gone worse — a knockout loss in the first
\nround to current
\nProfessional Fighters League<\/a> champion Vadim
\nNemkov<\/a>. But even in a loss, he saw the great work performed by
\nthe Florida-based
\nAmerican Top Team<\/a>. It was enough to prompt him to move to the
\nUnited States and start anew. A year after that, he was brought
\ninto the PFL on 20 days\u2019 notice. That one fight was the start of a
\ndominant winning streak that culminated in becoming a champion,
\nalong with a nice $1 million check.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt completely changed my life. It made all my work, all the blood
\nand tears, all the chances I took; all worth it. I was able to
\nshowcase my abilities in the best possible fashion. That year, in
\n2018, I came into the PFL as a heavyweight. I had only fought as a
\nlight-heavyweight up to then. But I was highly confident. After
\nentering the tournament through a side window, I scored three
\nknockouts and one submission, wrapping up 2018 in a historic event
\nat Madison Square Garden on New Year’s Eve. That\u2019s when I became
\nworld champion. Since then, I\u2019ve been among the best heavyweights
\nin the MMA world. I\u2019ll always be thankful to the PFL. They changed
\nnot just my life, but also that of many other fighters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Afterward, he took 2019 off to deal with some injuries. He had
\npushed himself too hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cAround that time, my PFL contract was going to end, and the
\n
\nUFC<\/a> showed some interest. It was a dream of mine. I signed with
\nthem in the middle of the COVID pandemic, in 2020. Things felt very
\nuncertain around the world. In the UFC, I did well. After starting
\nout on two losses as a heavyweight, I took a little time to
\nrecalibrate. We decided I\u2019d come back as a light-heavyweight.
\nThings started working out again. I was healthier. I won four in a
\nrow, including a KO against Ovince St.
\nPreux<\/a>. After I defeated Ion
\nCutelaba<\/a> in 2024, the UFC chose not to renew me. I get it. It\u2019s
\ntheir choice. But I\u2019m also thankful to the UFC. It was one of the
\nbest contracts I\u2019ve had in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, he found time to rest and take care of his family in
\nBrazil. A daughter was born. And he kept training the whole time.
\nThere was the possibility of earning a paycheck in the Global Fight
\nLeague, as most MMA fans know, nothing has materialized yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe GFL came around with great proposals, but I believe they bit
\n[off] more than they could chew. In the end, their cards were
\ncanceled. They lost credibility with that. It did bother me
\npersonally, since I had gone into training camp expecting to fight
\nfor them. They mentioned a profit-sharing arrangement with the
\nfighters. I hope that does take place, since we are the ones who
\nmake the show happen. We deserve proper payment and recognition.
\nBut my focus right now is on doing well within MVP.\u201d<\/p>\n

The
\nMVP \u201cRousey vs. Carano\u201d<\/a> card takes place on May 16 at the
\nIntuit Dome in Los Angeles. Francis
\nNgannou<\/a>, a former UFC champion on a seven-fight KO streak, is
\nan intimidating presence. Lins has been getting ready for him with
\nhis usual partners. At ATT, there\u2019s never a shortage of talented
\nbig guys.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been training at American Top Team since 2017. It\u2019s my home
\nhere in the U.S. I worked on my wrestling, muay thai, strength and
\nconditioning and boxing. I\u2019ve only worked with boxing coach Ivan de
\nOliveira for three years. But during that time, he\u2019s added much to
\nmy abilities. American Top Team has athletes from every part of the
\nworld, so there are several training partners with Francis\u2019 size
\nand style, guys like Renan
\nFerreira<\/a>, Vitor
\n\u201cVitao\u201d Resende<\/a> and [former UFC champion] Junior dos
\nSantos<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Note that both Ferreira and dos Santos have failed to defeat
\nNgannou\u2019s devastating power. Nonetheless, Lins feels confident
\nabout his own future as well as MVP\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a one-bout contract. It\u2019s just to fight Francis. I see
\nmyself as the winner. I\u2019m going to shock the world. I would love to
\nsign a multi-fight contract with them. Our sport needs
\norganizations like MVP that are already changing things in boxing.
\nI believe this is the first of many MMA events they\u2019ll be putting
