Considered one of the most popular
\nUFC<\/a> fighters in Brazil today Carlos
\nPrates<\/a> was recently invited to appear on one of Brazil’s most
\npopular podcasts: Podpah, a YouTube channel with almost 10 million
\nsubscribers.<\/p>\n

In a two-hour conversation, Prates drank four beers and smoked two
\ncigarettes, reminiscing about his entire journey and eliciting
\nlaughter from both hosts with his usual candor. According to
\n
\nThe Fighting Nerds<\/a> product, his entry into fighting was an
\nalternative found by his mother due to his difficulties at
\nschool.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother is a teacher, and since I was very difficult and had
\nlearning difficulties, she decided to take me to a psychologist
\nwhen I was 8 years old, where I was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention
\nDeficit Hyperactivity Disorder),\u201d Prates said. \u201cOnce she saw me
\nengrossed in watching a DVD of Wanderlei
\nSilva<\/a> fighting Yuki Kondo<\/a> in
\nPride, and noticed my interest in fighting, [she] decided to enroll
\nme in a muay thai school.\u201d<\/p>\n

In martial arts, Prates began to stand out and found his path. At
\nage 22, when he already had nine MMA fights \u2014 four losses and five
\nwins \u2014 he knew that improving his striking ability would be a
\nturning point in his career. He saw an advertisement on Facebook
\nfor a six-month camp in Thailand for $3,000, and with his mother’s
\nfinancial help, he left for the land of muay thai.<\/p>\n

“It was supposed to be six months, and I stayed six years. In the
\nfirst month alone, I had six fights,” said Prates, estimating that
\ntoday he has around 140 fights, including both muay thai and
\nMMA.<\/p>\n

The experience of fighting more than once a week to support himself
\nin Thailand brought Prates, in addition to calmness, the experience
\nof fighting injured.<\/p>\n

“It’s very difficult for a high-performance athlete to arrive at a
\nfight after a tough camp without any injuries. In the fight with
\n[Jack Della] Maddalena, for example, I had a partial tear of the
\nligament in my right shoulder and couldn’t raise my arm above my
\nhead,” said Prates, also acknowledging that before this fight he “overdid it with the partying” during the break he usually takes
\nbetween camps.<\/p>\n

“This time I went a little overboard. I fought [Leon] Edwards in
\nNovember and only went back to training for JDM in February. Since
\nI arrived in the UFC, I’ve never spent so much time away from the
\ngym, totally off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here for a Good Time, Not a Long Time<\/h2>\n

Prates also said that he believes he will be the next to fight for
\nthe belt against the winner of Ian Garry<\/a> and
\nIslam
\nMakhachev<\/a>. Should he capture welterweight gold, Prates has no
\ndesigns on setting any records for championship longevity.<\/p>\n

“Hell no. I\u2019m 32 years old, I want to fight until I’m 35,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cAfter the belt, do some more super fights and that’s good.\u201d<\/p>\n

One super fight that intrigues Prates is a matchup against current
\nUFC lightweight champ Ilia
\nTopuria<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It would be a great fight,\u201d Prates said. \u201cBut think I can make it
\ndifficult for him with my reach advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n
