The
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a>\u2019s return to Azerbaijan has taken
\na hit.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, perennial middleweight contender Vettori (19-10-1)
\nposted on Instagram<\/a>
\nthat he would no longer be competing at
\nUFC Baku<\/a>, also known as UFC Fight Night 280. The Italian
\nsuffered a rib injury that does not need surgery but will prohibit
\nhim from appearing on June 27. He was slated to face Ismail
\nNaurdiev<\/a> (25-8) at the National Gymnastics Arena in the capital
\ncity of Azerbaijan either as the main card opener or preliminary
\nheadliner.<\/p>\n

Vettori explained, \u201cUnfortunately I\u2019m here to tell you that a few
\ndays ago, I got hurt on my rib. I did an MRI and it came back today
\nshowing that the rib is broken, so I won\u2019t be fighting June 27. I
\nwas really looking forward to this fight. I moved from Florida to
\nCalifornia for this camp. I wanted to get back to my roots, train
\nwith Beneil
\n[Dariush]<\/a>, train with Julian for my boxing, train with Chase
\nfor my conditioning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Italian Stallion\u201d continued, \u201cI was feeling good, but
\nsometimes s–t happens and you can\u2019t do [anything] about it. So
\nyeah, now I\u2019m going to focus on my recovery, hopefully it doesn\u2019t
\ntake too long, 4-to-6 weeks [until] I\u2019m good to train again. If
\nthey reschedule me with the same guy, great. If not, doesn\u2019t
\nmatter. Anybody is good for me. For everybody that supported me,
\nI\u2019m thankful for that, and I promise you that I will be back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still just 32 years of age\u2014Vettori joined the UFC a decade ago\u2014the
\nformerly ranked middleweight finds himself on a career-long losing
\nstreak of four straight. This skid remains the lone time as a
\nprofessional that Vettori has dropped consecutive bouts. With his
\nlast win, a decision over Roman
\nDolidze<\/a>, coming in 2023, Vettori has gone on to lose four times
\non the scorecards to Jared
\nCannonier<\/a>, Dolidze in their rematch, Brendan
\nAllen<\/a> and Brunno
\nFerreira<\/a>. It is currently unclear if the UFC will book a new
\nfight for Naurdiev, or preserve the pairing and reschedule it for a
\nlater date.<\/p>\n
