Referee Mark Lyson allegedly admitted to making a mistake in
\nRico
\nVerhoeven<\/a>\u2019s controversial loss against Oleksandr
\nUsyk. <\/p>\n

Lyson was the third man inside the ring when Verhoeven challenged
\nUsyk for the WBC heavyweight title last weekend in front of the
\nPyramids in Giza, Egypt. A massive underdog, Verhoeven landed the
\nmore significant strikes for the most part. Verhoeven appeared to
\nbe on the way to a monumental upset win when Usyk dropped him late
\nin the 11th round. While Verhoeven returned to his feet, Usyk
\nbacked him up with a barrage of unanswered shots. Lyson abruptly
\nstepped in and called a stop to the contest with officially a
\nsecond left in the 11th round. <\/p>\n

If the official stoppage wasn\u2019t already controversial enough, some
\nrumors suggest that Lyson stopped the bout after the bell went off.
\nThe make matters worse, there was no fight clock for viewers on the
\nlive broadcast. Verhoeven\u2019s coach Peter Fury claims Lyson was
\ntravelling with him on the same flight back home. When Fury
\nconfronted Lyson about the stoppage, the referee allegedly admitted
\nthat he didn\u2019t hear the bell go off. Fury credits Lyson for
\nadmitting his mistake, and they ended things by shaking hands.<\/p>\n

A Confession and a Handshake<\/h2>\n

\u201cThe referee was on the flight with me on the way back,\u201d Fury told
\niFL TV<\/a>. \u201c\u2026 I said, \u2018You made a mistake.\u2019 And he
\nsaid to me, which was very important, he said, \u2018Peter, I didn\u2019t
\nhear the bell.\u2019 I said, \u2018Well, that I believe [that] because I
\ndidn\u2019t hear the bell either. I thought it was two seconds before\u2026
\nI\u2019ve gotta give the fellow the credit. I don\u2019t wanna slate anybody.
\nI told him I believe he made a mistake. We shook hands.\u201d
