Daniel
\nRodriguez<\/a> has a story to pass down through
\ngenerations. <\/p>\n

Rodriguez (20-5) is scheduled to headline UFC
\nBelgrade<\/a> against Uros Medic<\/a>
\n(13-3) on Aug. 1. The booking comes just months after Rodriguez was
\nreleased from a Mexican prison. <\/p>\n

Rodriguez was arrested for crossing the Mexican border with
\nmarijuana and ended up spending eight months in a prison in
\nTijuana. Rodriguez recently revealed how he ended up sharing a cell
\nin jail with a cartel leader. Rodriguez was getting bitten by
\nbedbugs while initially sharing a room with 20 guys. By then, the
\nword had gotten around that \u201cD-Rod\u201d was a UFC fighter. A guard
\noffered to shift Rodriguez to better accommodations in the jail for
\n$7,000. Rodriguez then met with the guy who was the leader of a
\ngang and had special arrangements in the jail. In addition to all
\nthe basic amenities, the leader\u2019s cell also had a TV with a
\nPlayStation. The gang leader offered Rodriguez to move into his
\ncell for $3,000, and the UFC welterweight immediately
\nobliged. <\/p>\n

While sharing the cell, the cartel head would ask Rodriguez to walk
\naround with him in the yard. Rodriguez got the feeling that the
\nleader wanted to show that they both had each other\u2019s backs.
\nRodriguez also trusted the cartel boss, which he admits is a tough
\nthing to do in prison.<\/p>\n

\u2018I Really Trusted Him\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cTurns out, dude\u2019s the head of a cartel,\u201d Rodriguez said on
\n“The Joe Rogan Experience\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s like,
\n\u2018I wanted to show you around a little bit, let you know how we\u2019re
\nrunning things out here.\u2019 Kind of just gave me the rundown. And
\nthis dude had it made. I get there, there TVs in the f\u2014-ing cells,
\nhe has a PlayStation, he has all the amenities you could think of\u2026
\nHe\u2019s like, \u2018If you want, you could come up here and get
\naccommodated with us. But it\u2019s gonna cost you a little bit of
\nmoney, $3,000.\u2019 I looked at the guard; this guard was trying to
\ncharge me $7,000\u2026 I was like, \u2018Yeah, let\u2019s do it.\u2019 So they gave me
\nthis brand new Nike tracksuit. I get there, and he\u2019s like, \u2018Just be
\nmy cellmate.\u2019… I ended up getting the feeling that I was his
\nprotection. We would go to the yard, and he would be like, \u2018Walk
\nwith me.\u2019 I got the impression that I\u2019m his cellmate, I got his
\nback, he got my back. I really trusted him; that\u2019s one hard thing
\nto do in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cartel boss was serving a sentence along with his whole gang
\nfor impersonating government officials and raiding drug houses. The
\ncartel leader also had some boxing experience and helped Rodriguez
\ntrain by arranging boxing gloves and holding the mitts for
\nhim.  <\/p>\n
