Less than two months after announcing his retirement from the
\nOctagon at age 39, on the heels of his fifth consecutive loss\u2014a
\nknockout to Mike
\nMalott<\/a>\u2014\u201cDurinho\u201d Burns made a stylish comeback at UFC BJJ 9 on
\nThursday. The elder statesman grappler tapped out Brazilian
\nHorlando
\nMonteiro<\/a> in just 1:22 seconds with a slick rear-naked
\nchoke.<\/p>\n

Burns started the fight being taken down by his opponent, but
\nseemed to welcome that as he had a plan. \u201cDurinho\u201d quickly reversed
\nthe position and took Monteiro\u2019s back, where he secured the choke
\nthat ended the fight. It marked his first victory on the grappling
\nmats since he beat Rafael
\nLovato Jr.<\/a> in a special match in 2021.<\/p>\n

There are a lot of good jiu-jitsu fighters who would love to
\ncompete<\/h2>\n

Elated in victory, Burns was able to take off some of the pressure
\non his shoulders coming from five straight defeats in a cage. He
\ndid not go so far as to say he wanted to return to the confines of
\nMMA, but clearly indicated he enjoyed this experience and wishes to
\nreturn sooner than later.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so happy,\u201d Burns gushed after getting his hand raised. \u201cOh my
\ngod! It\u2019s been a while since I\u2019ve had a win, so it\u2019s so good to be
\nhere, putting my jiu-jitsu to the test.\u201d<\/p>\n

A UFC fighter spanning from 2014 to 2026, Burns made his way there
\nby becoming a world jiu-jitsu champion in 2011 after outpointing
\nthe aforementioned Gracie in 2011. Initially starting his tenure as
\na welterweight, he quickly returned to lightweight and had mixed
\nsuccess. It all came to a head in 2021 when as a surging
\nwelterweight on a six-fight win streak, Burns vied for the
\n170-pound throne. While he had his moments against champ Kamaru
\nUsman<\/a>, even dropping him early, Usman rallied to put him away
\nearly in the third frame.<\/p>\n

Following that, Burns defeated Stephen
\nThompson<\/a> and had the most emblematic fight of his career,
\nwhere, even though he was defeated by Khamzat
\nChimaev<\/a>, he delivered what many called the toughest fight of
\nthe then-undefeated Chechen\u2019s career. After coming up short to
\nChimaev, \u201cDurinho\u201d defeated Neil Magny<\/a>
\nand Jorge
\nMasvidal<\/a>, but soon entered a series of five consecutive losses,
\nculminating in his retirement from this particular sport.<\/p>\n
