\nRodriguez<\/a> on short notice and capitalized on his
\nopportunity.<\/p>\n

The Lobo Gym product took built some more momentum in the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a>, as he wiped out Matt
\nSchnell<\/a> with punches in the first round of their featured
\n
\nUFC Fight Night 278<\/a> prelim on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las
\nVegas. Schnell (17-11, 7-9 UFC) bowed out of their 130-pound
\ncatchweight affair 2:32 into Round 1.<\/p>\n

Costa (16-5, 4-3 UFC) bided his time, made his reads and hit the
\naccelerator when the situation called for it.
\nHe dazed and felled Schnell with a clean left hook, sprawled on a
\ndesperation takedown attempt, pinned the American beneath him and
\nlet fly with rapid-fire hammerfists until the job was
\ndone<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, MMA Lab mainstay Marcus
\nMcGhee<\/a> outstruck and outmaneuvered John Yannis<\/a>
\nto a unanimous decision in their three-round bantamweight battle.
\nAll three judges turned in scorecards for McGhee (11-2, 5-1 UFC):
\n30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.<\/p>\n

A late-notice replacement for Jakub
\nWiklacz<\/a>, Yannis (10-5, 1-2) UFC) made the longtime John Crouch
\napprentice work for every inch of ground he gained. McGhee fought
\neffectively from the orthodox and southpaw stances, as he unleashed
\na persistent jab, kicks to all levels and sporadic counters. Yannis
\nseemed to steady himself in the middle stanza, but his output
\nplummeted across the final five minutes. McGhee seized the reins,
\npiled up points and sewed up loose ends against the ex-Fury
\nFighting Championship titleholder.<\/p>\n

McGhee, 36, has won seven of his past eight bouts.<\/p>\n

Further down the undercard, onetime Combate Global champion
\nEdgar
\nChairez<\/a> took out Bruno
\n\u201cBulldog\u201d Silva<\/a> with a club-and-sub rear-naked choke in the
\nfirst round of their flyweight clash.
\nSilva (15-9-2, 5-6 UFC) clocked out 4:13 into Round 1<\/a><\/strong>,
\nsuffering his first submission defeat since Sept. 24, 2011.<\/p>\n

Chairez (14-6, 4-2 UFC) troubled the Fight Ready product with his
\nlength and reach. He decked Silva with a right cross, allowed him
\nto stand, eventually lured him into another exchange and sat him
\ndown a second time by pairing a right uppercut with a left hook.
\nChairez pounced on his fallen prey, climbed into full mount,
\nprogressed to the back and cinched the fight-ending choke.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old Chairez has rattled off three straight
\nvictories.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Chelsea
\nChandler<\/a> rebounded from consecutive losses to Yana Santos<\/a>
\nand Joselyne
\nEdwards<\/a>, as she dismissed Lioness Studio standout Priscila
\nCachoeira<\/a> with an armbar in the first round of their women\u2019s
\nbantamweight confrontation.
\nChandler (7-4, 3-3 UFC) sealed the deal 3:42 into Round
\n1<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cachoeira (13-9, 5-9 UFC) turned her powerful hands loose, only to
\nbe met with return fire. Chandler dropped the Brazilian with a left
\nhook to the top of the head and a follow-up right hand, powered
\ninto top position and floated to the back. From there, the Cesar
\nGracie<\/a> disciple activated her ground-and-pound, transitioned to
\nthe armbar and forced the tap.<\/p>\n

It was Chandler\u2019s first successful submission in almost six
\nyears.<\/p>\n

Deeper into the prelims, Chute Boxe export Joanderson
\nBrito<\/a> put away Jordan
\nLeavitt<\/a> with a ninja choke in the first round of their
\nfeatherweight encounter. Leavitt (13-4, 6-4 UFC), who entered the
\ncage on the strength of back-to-back victories over Kurt
\nHolobaugh<\/a> and Yadier Del
\nValle<\/a>, waved the white flag of surrender 4:19 into Round 1.<\/p>\n

Brito (19-5-1, 7-3 UFC) stymied the Syndicate MMA rep\u2019s repeated
\nbids for takedowns and tie-ups, then waited for him to make a
\nmistake.
\nLeavitt soon crashed forward with an ill-advised double-leg attempt
\nand wandered into the Joao Emilio prot\u00e9g\u00e9\u2019s waiting arms. Brito bit
\ndown on the choke, cut off avenues of escape and prompted the
\ntapout<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old Brito now boasts 16 finishes among his 18
\nprofessional wins.<\/p>\n

Finally, former Invicta Fighting Championships titleholder Ketlen
\nSouza<\/a> dispatched Ariane
\nCarnelossi<\/a> with punches and a head kick in the first round of
\ntheir women\u2019s strawweight rematch.
\nSouza (17-6, 4-3 UFC) drew the curtain a cool 94 seconds into Round
\n1<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Carnelossi (15-5, 3-4 UFC)\u2014who had stopped her Brazilian compatriot
\nwith a body kick in their first meeting seven years ago\u2014tested the
\nwaters with jabs to the body, a few leg kicks and the occasional
\nmulti-punch burst. Souza was unimpressed. She staggered Carnelossi
\nwith an overhand right, floored her with a subsequent head kick and
\nslammed the door with a sweeping standing-to-ground left.<\/p>\n

It was the sixth first-round stoppage of Souza\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

In other action, Jeisla
\nChaves<\/a> (8-0, 1-0 UFC) eked out a split decision\u201429-28, 28-29,
\n29-28\u2014over Yuneisy
\nDuben<\/a> (6-2, 0-2 UFC) in their three-round women\u2019s flyweight
