\nplanned, he will be on to the next challenge immediately.<\/p>\n

Pereira (13-3) faces Ciryl Gane<\/a>
\n(13-2) for the interim heavyweight title at
\nUFC Freedom 250<\/a> on Sunday in Washington, D.C. If he prevails,
\nhe will be the first fighter to win UFC titles in three different
\nweight classes, a feat that would bolster his already legendary
\nr\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n

An interim title win would also set up a unification bout with
\nTom
\nAspinall<\/a>, who has been out of action since his title defense
\nagainst Gane ended in a no contest due to an inadvertent eye poke
\nby the challenger. However, in light of Aspinall\u2019s long recovery,
\nwhich has reportedly required surgery and may again, \u201cPoatan\u201d
\nclaims to be unwilling to wait.<\/p>\n

Pereira, who turns 39 in July, wants to fight as soon as possible
\nand he doesn\u2019t think Aspinall will be an option, telling UFC on TNT
\nSports:<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that Tom is going to be ready. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s
\neven training. I think it\u2019s about recovering from the surgery. I\u2019m
\na guy that, I want to get ready, I want to fight somebody as soon
\nas possible. I want another fight as soon as possible. Again, I\u2019m
\n38 years old, I ain\u2019t got time to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it is not common for interim belts to be defended rather than
\nunified with the regular belt, it won\u2019t be the first time in UFC
\nheavyweight history: Aspinall defended his interim strap against
\nCurtis
\nBlaydes<\/a> when the promotion could not agree on terms with
\nJon
\nJones<\/a>, then was promoted to undisputed champ when Jones retired
\nlast year.<\/p>\n
