The last-ditch effort to stop the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a>\u2019s tentpole show at the White
\nHouse has gone up in smoke.<\/p>\n

Federal judge Amit Mehta from the District Court for the District
\nof Columbia
\nissued an opinion<\/a> on the lawsuit filed by the Public Integrity
\nProject to halt the
\nUFC White House<\/a> card. The memorandum was filed on Friday, which
\ndenied the motion to establish a temporary restraining order to
\nhalt the event until the court can fully rule on the matters. The
\ncourt indicated that the plaintiffs had not fully demonstrated
\nstanding\u2014that is, the right to bring a lawsuit\u2014or that they have
\nsuffered a demonstrable, actual harm that they would suffer should
\nthis show carry on.<\/p>\n

In order to establish standing, the plaintiffs have to establish
\nthat they were or are about to be injured physically, financially,
\netc. They must also show a link between that injury and what they
\nare suing about, to show the causal connection between the two.
\nFinally, those parties have to allege that the court ruling on
\ntheir side will protect them from that harm. On the first criteria,
\nthe court said the plaintiffs failed based on the lack of
\ndocumentable injuries, and that this court would not hear a
\n\u201cgeneralized grievance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hideous, grotesque and disgusting<\/h2>\n

The plaintiffs also claimed that the construction of the \u201cClaw,\u201d
\nthe stage and structure in which the UFC has erected to hold the
\nfights, is causing them a form of injury. Calling the creation of
\nsteel and glass \u201chideous,\u201d \u201cgrotesque\u201d and \u201cdisgusting,\u201d the
\nplaintiffs expressed that this would \u201cdiminish the personal
\nenjoyment\u201d and \u201cexperience of beauty\u201d of looking at the National
\nMall without this new creation in the way. The court found this
\nventure also unsuccessful, as the parties have to be \u201cdirectly
\naffected\u201d by what the UFC and government did.<\/p>\n

The court also argued that the plaintiffs have not demonstrated
\nthat holding this fight card would cause the parties\u2014and the
\npopulace at large\u2014substantial harm that is practically guaranteed
\nto happen. It cannot be imagined or perceived, and has to be
\nexpected or calculated properly. If the plaintiffs had actually
\nwished to stop the harm done to them and other individuals, judge
\nMehta continued, they would have filed the suit much sooner than a
\nweek before the event. The fight card will proceed as scheduled,
\nbarring any weather complications on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n
