While Alex
\nPereira<\/a> admits that Ciryl Gane<\/a>
\nrocked him in their UFC White House matchup, the Brazilian star
\nalso believes what followed deserved some closer examination.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoatan\u201d was on the defensive after being hurt by a Gane jab in
\ntheir interim heavyweight title bout on Sunday, but during the
\nensuing salvo, \u201cBon Gamin\u201d appeared to land multiple 12-to-6 elbows
\nto the back of his opponent\u2019s head. While Pereira did return to his
\nfeet, Gane ultimately finished the job with more powerful punches
\nat the 1:27 mark of Round 2.<\/p>\n

In a video on YouTube, Pereira addressed the loss as well as Dean\u2019s
\nofficiating in the heat of the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cPutting myself in the referee\u2019s shoes, my opponent\u2019s there and
\ncatches me, I drop, he starts striking,\u201d Pereira said. \u201cThe ref is
\nwatching that they are illegal shots, but he thinks like this, \u2018How
\nam I going to stop this fight?\u2019 It\u2019s illegal, it\u2019s in the rules.
\nYou\u2019re not going to be wrong if you stop it. It\u2019s in the rules; you
\nstop it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf people say, \u2018Why did you stop it?\u2019 Look at the video; nobody
\nwas going to say anything about the ref. In that scenario, people
\ngive him credit as a man. But now he is not a man. He shouldn\u2019t
\nhave been refereeing that fight. To be honest, a guy like that
\nshould be punished. That\u2019s how it is. It\u2019s a very serious job. It\u2019s
\na very serious event. What happened, the ref should\u2019ve faced legal
\nconsequences for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pereira was well aware of Gane\u2019s penchant for fouls, which is
\nsomething he claimed to have addressed during the rules meeting
\nbefore the fight.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a contact sport, but on the back of the head? You\u2019re right
\nthere, man, you have to be seeing it. But that was the opportunity
\nof a lifetime for him, and the referee was right there to see it,\u201d
\nPereira said. \u201cThe day before the fight, we had a rules meeting. I
\nasked [coach] Plinio [Cruz] to translate for him, and I told him,
\n\u2018Look, man, eye poke, groin strikes, those things can happen. It\u2019s
\nnot supposed to, but it can happen. But this guy has a long history
\nof it.\u2019 Dirty shots, throwing punches to the back of the head,
\nelbows. I saw some videos, so I was worried. So I brought that up
\nwith him ahead of time and asked him to keep an eye on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPoatan\u201d admitted that Gane did hurt him prior to the fouls, but he
\nalso thinks that the elbows hindered his ability to recover.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you watch the footage, multiple shots there, multiple elbows,\u201d
\nPereira said. \u201cOK, sure, the jab, but given everything that
\nhappened, illegal. I was getting up, it became difficult to
\nrecover, but I believe that if it wasn\u2019t for those shots I
\n[wouldn\u2019t] be in that situation and could\u2019ve possibly recovered.
\nMaybe not, but they were very hard shots and illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n

No Regrets<\/h2>\n

Pereira revealed that he has already asked the promotion for an
\nimmediate rematch with Gane, who is expected to face Tom
\nAspinall<\/a> in a title unification bout. It\u2019s currently unclear if
\nthe UFC will grant his request. The Brazilian was attempting to
\nmake history by becoming the first three-division champion in UFC
\nhistory, and despite the result, he doesn\u2019t regret making the move
\nto heavyweight.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike I said in the Octagon, if I hadn\u2019t taken a risk every time I
\nfought, I would not be who I am today,\u201d Pereira said. \u201cThird belt,
\nnobody has done it. Nobody. Coming from middleweight, light
\nheavyweight, then heavyweight, it\u2019s very difficult, but within
\nreality. Obviously, for some mistakes, it wasn\u2019t this time, but
\nthose of you who know me know how I come back. I will be back
\nstronger.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn respect to training, do I need to change my training? I think I
\ndid everything right. I was good in the fight. The strategy was
\nbeing put into practice, all the ideas me and my team had, it is
\nwhat it is. Risks are there. The payoff in the fight game is a bit
\ncomplicated. The time can come for something good, other times bad,
\nthat\u2019s how it is. But like I said, for those who know me, be
\ncertain in how I\u2019ll return. I\u2019ll be back stronger, focused like
\nalways, dedicated like always, that\u2019s it. I\u2019m happy. I\u2019m happy with
\neverything.\u201d<\/p>\n
