Topuria was a massive favourite going into his lightweight title
\ndefense against Gaethje at
\nUFC White House<\/a> on Sunday at the White House. \u201cEl Matador\u201d also
\nexuded a level of confidence bordering on cockiness going into the
\nfight. <\/p>\n

However, Gaethje brutally beat up Topuria, forcing his corner to
\nthrow in the towel at the end of the fourth round. \u201cThe Highlight\u201d
\nhanded Topuria his first-ever professional loss in a monumental
\nupset. Tsarukyan believes Topuria\u2019s lesson in humility will teach
\nhim to avoid overconfidence. According to \u201cAhalkalakets,\u201d Topuria
\nwas more focused on his media obligations than his training, going
\ninto the fight against Gaethje.<\/p>\n

A Lesson in Humility<\/h2>\n

\u201cI think this loss is going to teach him a lot of lessons \u2014 not to
\nbe overconfident and to respect your opponent,\u201d Tsarukyan said on
\n\u201cThe Ariel Helwani Show.\u201d \u201cAnd keep grinding. I think he was more
\nfocused on his media stuff more than training camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Topuria (17-1) was supremely confident that he would knock Gaethje
\n(28-5) out in the first round. The previously undefeated
\nGeorgian-Spaniard even claimed to have a video of how he would
\nscore the knockout, which was to be released after the fight.
\nGaethje had warned Topuria that he would have to eat his words once
\nthe fight went past the first round. Topuria also threw a party to
\ncelebrate his expected win a day before the fight. Topuria had even
\nupdated his record in his Instagram bio to 18-0, which has now been
\nremoved. <\/p>\n
