Beatriz
\nMesquita<\/a>\u2019s otherworldly ground skills were there when she
\nneeded them most.<\/p>\n

The undefeated American Top Team star remained unbeaten and
\ncontinued her climb in the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> women\u2019s bantamweight division,
\nas she disposed of Melissa
\nMullins<\/a> with an armbar in the first round of a featured
\n
\nUFC Fight Night 279<\/a> prelim on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las
\nVegas.
\nMesquita (8-0, 3-0 UFC) drew the curtain 3:16 into Round
\n1<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mullins (7-3, 2-3 UFC) nearly sprang the upset. She dazed Mesquita
\nwith a left hook, then closed in on the 10-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu
\nworld champion with follow-up punches. Putting the icing on the
\ncake proved problematic. The resourceful Mesquita lured her
\nopponent into her venomous guard, cleared the cobwebs and snatched
\nthe armbar. Mullins fought briefly to free herself but had no
\nchoice but to tap.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, ex-Inka Fighting Championship titleholder Kevin
\nBorjas<\/a> outstruck the heavily favored and previously unbeaten
\nAndre
\nLima<\/a> to a unanimous decision in their three-round flyweight
\naffair. Scores were 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28\u2014all for Borjas (11-5,
\n2-4 UFC), who missed weight for the match by three pounds and
\nforfeited 20% of his purse.<\/p>\n

Lima (11-1, 4-1 UFC) landed his share of kicks to the body and head
\nbut too often limited himself to single strikes. Borjas cut loose
\nin three-, four- and five-punch bursts, staggered the Brazilian
\nwith a right hook in the waning seconds of the first round and
\ncircled away from danger. He also survived a second-round low blow
\nthat resulted in a five-minute pause to the action. Lima sent the
\nPeruvian\u2019s mouthpiece flying with a stiff jab in Round 3 but never
\nestablished much of a rhythm and fell short of the mark as a
\nresult.<\/p>\n

The win snapped a two-fight losing streak for Borjas.<\/p>\n

Further down the undercard, a fast start and airtight takedown
\ndefense carried onetime CES MMA champion Mitch
\nRaposo<\/a> to a split decision over Allan
\nNascimento<\/a> in their three-round flyweight clash. All three
\njudges scored it 29-28: Eric Colon and Junichiro Kamijo for Raposo,
\nSal D\u2019Amato for Nascimento.<\/p>\n

Effective movement, sharp jabs and occasional multi-punch bursts
\ntipped the spear for Raposo (11-3, 2-2 UFC). He forced Nascimento
\nto give chase for much of the first two rounds and walked him into
\nsneaky right uppercuts more than once, all while opening a cut
\nunder the Diego Lima-trained Chute Boxe export\u2019s right eye. Raposo
\ndid not escape unscathed. Nascimento (22-7, 4-2 UFC) decked the
\nTyson
\nChartier<\/a> disciple with a clean one-two in Round 3, assumed top
\nposition and made moves with his ground-and-pound. However, Raposo
\nweathered the assault, bled the remaining time off the clock and
\nlet the judges do their work.<\/p>\n

The setback was Nascimento\u2019s first since Oct. 30, 2021.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Bellator MMA veteran Gaston
\nBolanos<\/a> rode an active kicking game and unflappable resilience
\nto a unanimous decision over ex-Fury Fighting Championship
\ntitleholder Michael
\nAswell<\/a> in their three-round featherweight confrontation. All
\nthree judges turned in 29-28 scorecards for Bolanos (9-5, 3-2 UFC),
\nwho rebounded from a submission loss to Quang Le<\/a> a
\nlittle more than a year ago.<\/p>\n

Aswell (11-5, 1-3 UFC) was the aggressor from the start but left
\nhimself exposed to counters and struggled to pace himself properly.
\nBolanos connected with the more consequential blows across the
\nfirst 10 minutes, though both men suffered cuts near their right
\neyes. The Combat Sports Academy standout then withstood a late
\nrally from Aswell, who turned up the heat in the third round, fired
\npunches in combination and pressured his Peruvian counterpart onto
\nhis back foot. Even so, Bolanos steadied himself under duress and
\nsettled for the decision.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old Aswell has suffered back-to-back defeats for the
\nfirst time as a pro.<\/p>\n

Finally, Kaizen MMA product Levan
\nChokheli<\/a> put away Leon
\nShahbazyan<\/a> with punches in the first round of their
\nwelterweight encounter.
\nShahbazyan (12-5, 0-1 UFC) entered the cage on a four-fight winning
\nstreak and made his unceremonious exit just 23 seconds into
\nRound<\/a><\/strong> .<\/p>\n

Chokheli (15-3, 1-0 UFC) was flawless in his promotional debut. The
\n29-year-old Georgian blasted Shahbazyan\u2019s lead leg with vicious
\nkicks, pinned him to the fence and unleashed his hands. Chokheli
\neventually folded the Freestyle MMA rep with a left hook to the
\nbody, at which point referee Kerry Hadley decided he had seen
\nenough.<\/p>\n

It was the eighth sub-minute finish of Chokheli\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

In other action, Luana
\nSantos<\/a> (11-2, 6-1 UFC) laid claim to a unanimous
\ndecision\u201430-27, 30-27, 30-27\u2014over Karol Rosa<\/a>
\n(19-8, 8-5 UFC) in their three-round women\u2019s bantamweight tilt; and
\nShane
\nCollins<\/a> (8-0, 1-0 UFC) took a unanimous decision from Otari
\nTanzilovi<\/a> (10-2, 0-1 UFC) in their three-round featherweight
\nscrap, as the former A1 Combat champion swept the scorecards with
