\nMakhachev<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Velasquez considers Makhachev an extraordinary athlete who has
\nreached the pinnacle of the sport. From conversations with his
\ncoach, Javier Mendez, Velasquez knows that the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> welterweight king is a hard
\nworker in the gym.<\/p>\n

Cain Velasquez explains why Islam Makhachev continues to
\ndominate under Javier Mendez<\/h2>\n

Having been honed into a champion himself by Mendez, Velasquez
\nknows that Makhachev is in good hands with the
\nAmerican Kickboxing Academy<\/a> coach. The Hall of Famer and former
\nUFC heavyweight champion believes the Dagestani will continue his
\ndominant title run.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Islam] is a special type of athlete,\u201d Velasquez told Red Corner
\nMMA. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the guys at the pinnacle of this sport. I talk
\nwith Javier all the time, and Islam and those guys are always doing
\ngreat. They are in great hands. Javier is the one who builds
\nchampions\u2026 I see Islam continuing to do what he\u2019s been doing, and
\nthat\u2019s winning impressively. He\u2019s somebody who has mastered all
\naspects of MMA.\u201d<\/p>\n

Velasquez was the flagbearer for AKA before the likes of Daniel
\nCormier<\/a>, Luke
\nRockhold<\/a> and Khabib
\nNurmagomedov<\/a> won gold in the UFC. Makhachev is the latest to
\nbring a UFC championship to the gym.<\/p>\n

Makhachev (28-1) is undefeated in 16 straight UFC outings since his
\nlone professional loss in 2015. He defended the UFC lightweight
\ntitle four times, the most in the division\u2019s history, before moving
\nup to welterweight and dominantly dethroning Jack
\nDella Maddalena<\/a> to win the 170-pound title.<\/p>\n

Makhachev is now set to defend his welterweight title for the first
\ntime against Ian Garry<\/a>
\n(17-1) at UFC
\n330<\/a> on Aug. 15 at Xfinity Mobile Center in Philadelphia. A
\nsuccessful title defense will see the Russian break the record for
\nthe longest win streak in the history of the Octagon.<\/p>\n
