\nequipped to upset Islam
\nMakhachev<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Garry (17-1) is scheduled to challenge Makhachev (28-1) for the
\n
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> welterweight title in the main
\nevent of UFC
\n330<\/a> on Aug. 15 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Maia
\nrecently discussed Garry\u2019s preparation and dissected the
\nmatchup.<\/p>\n

Ian Garry prepares for Islam Makhachev with help from Demian
\nMaia ahead of UFC 330<\/h2>\n

Maia has been a crucial part of Garry\u2019s fight camps since they
\nfirst met at a seminar in Barcelona in 2023 and the jiu-jitsu
\nlegend recently revealed that he helped Garry in Spain before the
\nIrishman went back to England to finish the final phase of his camp
\nfor UFC 330.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur partnership started in 2023,\u201d Maia told Sherdog\u2019s Marcelo
\nAlonso. \u201cI went to teach a seminar at a friend’s academy in
\nBarcelona, and Ian and his wife reached out to me. He came to train
\nwith me, and ever since then he’s been coming to Brazil regularly.
\nLast week I traveled to Spain to teach another seminar, and we
\nspent several days together doing an intensive camp focused on what
\nwe believe he needs to do in the grappling exchanges against Islam.
\nHe finished the final stage of his camp in England with his
\njiu-jitsu coach, John
\nHathaway<\/a>, who also fought in the UFC in our weight class.\u201d<\/p>\n

Makhachev is the No. 1 pound-for-pound UFC fighter and a -300
\nfavorite going into his clash against Garry. However, many believe
\nGarry\u2019s frame and defensive savviness will pose a threat to
\nMakhachev\u2019s dominant run. Notably, Maia doesn\u2019t think Garry\u2019s
\ndistance management is his biggest strength.<\/p>\n

Ian Garry\u2019s fight IQ highlighted ahead of UFC 330 title fight
\nwith Islam Makhachev<\/h2>\n

According to Maia, Garry\u2019s fight IQ separates him from other
\nfighters. The Brazilian claims to have taught the Irish
\nwelterweight a takedown variation during the fight week of his win
\nagainst Carlos
\nPrates<\/a> last year, which “The Future” executed 10 times in the
\nbout.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people say he’s the toughest matchup for Islam because he has
\nexcellent takedown defense, longer reach, outstanding cardio, and
\nhe’s a complete fighter, but I think his biggest strength is his
\nfight IQ,\u201d Maia added. \u201cGarry reads his opponents extremely well
\nand knows how to adapt. When he fought Carlos Prates, I showed him
\na variation of a takedown during fight week, and he executed it
\nperfectly about 10 times during the fight. He’s someone who learns
\nvery quickly and knows how to make life difficult for his
\nopponents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his confidence in Garry\u2019s skillset, Maia isn\u2019t
\nunderestimating the challenge that Makhachev poses. He believes the
\nDagestani welterweight champion could stand his own against elite
\nopponents in no-gi jiu jitsu.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expect a very tough fight. Islam is one of the greatest fighters
\nof all time. His jiu-jitsu is of an extremely high level. I’d even
\nsay he could compete successfully in elite no-gi Brazilian
\njiu-jitsu tournaments. So, it’s going to be a historical title
\ndispute.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maia also confirmed that he will be in Garry’s corner on fight
\nnight alongside Diego Lima, John Hathaway and Paulo Mauricio
