The California State Athletic Commission executive director
\ndefended Dean’s handling of the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> interim title bout between Gane
\nand Pereira. The
\nUFC Freedom 250<\/a> co-headliner ended in a technical knockout
\nvictory for the Frenchman, but Pereira subsequently pointed out
\nthat illegal back-of-the-head shots were pivotal in the finishing
\nsequence.<\/p>\n

CSAC official says other referees would\u2019ve done the same as
\nHerb Dean at UFC Freedom 250<\/h2>\n

Dean has faced immense scrutiny in recent weeks after Pereira
\naccused him of mishandling his loss to Gane. The spotlight has been
\nfirmly on the veteran referee since the White House event, with
\nfans and fighters pointing out alleged errors in his past and
\nrecent outings.<\/p>\n

Pereira argues that Dean should have intervened after Gane landed
\nmultiple punches to the back of his head before the finish.
\nHowever, Foster believes that the right call was made, claiming
\nthat other high-profile referees would\u2019ve also let the bout
\ncontinue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat looked like a normal fight to me,\u201d Foster told MMA Fighting.
\n\u201cThere was no doubt a few of them got through and hit [the back of
\nthe head]. The question is what do you do in that situation? Do you
\nstop the action? I don\u2019t think many referees would have, if any,
\ncertainly at the high level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foster believes Dean handled the situation appropriately.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told Herb, in my view, you don\u2019t want to warn a lot of
\ntimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foster then explained that halting the action for the fouls could
\nhave unfairly altered the outcome by allowing Pereira time to
\nrecover after being rocked with a legal shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the dilemma,\u201d Foster said. \u201cSo, what do you do? That is
\nexactly Herb\u2019s dilemma, and I think it\u2019s worse if he stops it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further added that the criticism aimed at Dean was excessive and
\nreiterated his full confidence in the longtime official.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Herb Dean\u2019s a good referee,\u201d Foster added. \u201cYou\u2019ll see
\nHerb Dean on the main event of my upcoming UFCs because Herb Dean
\nis the senior referee in California. Herb Dean has my full
\nconfidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
