Islam Makhachev\u2019s grappling advantage before UFC 330
\nwelterweight title defense<\/h2>\n

Markes has worked with numerous high-level athletes at his Las
\nVegas gym, including Johnny
\nWalker<\/a>, Jessica
\nAndrade<\/a>, Alexander
\nVolkov<\/a>, Magomed
\nAnkalaev<\/a> and Kelvin
\nGastelum<\/a>. Speaking to Sherdog, he offered insight into
\nMakhachev’s grappling prowess.<\/p>\n

\u201cI watched him train here at the P.I. against an ADCC champion, a
\nBrazilian more than 10 kilograms [22 pounds] heavier, under
\ngrappling rules,\u201d Markes said. \u201cIt was an incredibly tough session
\nand Islam only lost by two or three points in that grappling
\nspar.\u201d<\/p>\n

The jiu-jitsu coach then broke down the Makhachev vs. Garry
\nmatchup, emphasizing that the challenger\u2019s best chance of victory
\nis using long-range strikes and avoiding grappling exchanges,
\nespecially considering how easily the Russian controlled former
\nchampion Jack
\nDella Maddalena<\/a> on the mat to win the welterweight title.<\/p>\n

\u201cIslam has the cardio to fight hard for five rounds,\u201d Markes added.
\n\u201cHe made Jack Della Maddalena, who’s bigger than Ian Garry, look
\nlike a white belt. If he manages to get the fight to the ground,
\nhe’ll create serious problems. Ian’s best chance is to use his
