Sean
\nStrickland<\/a> has slammed fighter compensation in the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Strickland recently detailed the financial plight of newly signed
\nUFC fighters. The outspoken reigning middleweight champion also hit
\nout at a UFC matchmaker and some of the promotion\u2019s practices that
\nhave rubbed him the wrong way.<\/p>\n

UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland says aspiring
\nfighters should understand the financial challenges of MMA<\/h2>\n

During a recent appearance on the \u201cShawn Ryan Show,\u201d Strickland
\noffered a blunt assessment of the life of the average UFC athlete,
\narguing that entry-level contracts and the financial realities of
\ncompeting in the Octagon leave many fighters struggling to make
\nends meet despite reaching MMA\u2019s biggest stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re a fighter, you\u2019re so f*cking poor,\u201d Strickland said.
\n\u201cEven in the UFC. UFC guys, they\u2019re signing guys at like, 10 and
\n10, [$10,000] to show, [$10,000] to win, $20 grand. So, then you
\npay off your manager, you pay taxes; if you lose, you only get like
\neight, seven grand.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Strickland, the financial challenges become even more
\nsevere when injuries or inactivity enter the equation. While he
\nacknowledged that the UFC provides life-changing opportunities for
\nmany international fighters, he described the promotion\u2019s pay
\nstructure as \u201cpredatory,\u201d particularly for athletes based in the
\nUnited States.<\/p>\n

Strickland also criticized the UFC\u2019s matchmaking process, claiming
\nfighters often feel pressured to accept short-notice bouts because
\ndeclining them can lead to lengthy layoffs. He then singled out
\nlongtime UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby, saying fighters often fear
\nturning down opportunities because of the possibility of being
\nsidelined for months.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis guy [Shelby] is so f*cking brutal,\u201d Strickland added. \u201cYou
\ncould have a boring fight or something, and this mother*cker will
\nbench you for like eight months. Or you could say, \u2018Hey Sean, I
\nwant a fight.\u2019 He\u2019ll call you two weeks out from a fight… And if
\nyou say no, he\u2019ll bench your ass. Yeah, the UFC is f*cking
\nbrutal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strickland even suggested he\u2019d discourage aspiring fighters from
\npursuing a UFC career, though he stopped short of dismissing the
\nopportunities the organization has provided him. Despite his
\ncriticism, Strickland acknowledged the opportunities the UFC has
\nprovided.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as I hate the UFC and I knock on them, they give people
\nopportunity you\u2019d never have,\u201d Strickland concluded. \u201cI\u2019d never
\nhave opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
