Coach Javier Mendez\u2019s confidence in Islam
\nMakhachev<\/a>\u2019s striking has grown leaps and bounds over the
\nyears.<\/p>\n

Makhachev (28-1) is scheduled to defend his
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> welterweight title for the first
\ntime against Ian Garry<\/a>
\n(17-1) at UFC
\n330<\/a> on Aug. 15 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. While
\nMakhachev is known for his wrestling and grappling prowess and
\nGarry\u2019s main asset is his evasive striking, Mendez claims his pupil
\nwon\u2019t be out of his depth on the feet.<\/p>\n

\u2018People sleep on his striking\u2019: Javier Mendez hails Islam
\nMakhachev\u2019s well-rounded skillset<\/h2>\n

Makhachev\u2019s striking has developed impressively with time, as he
\nheld his own against Dustin
\nPoirier<\/a> and knocked out Alexander
\nVolkanovski<\/a> with a head kick. Coach Mendez believes Makhachev
\ndoesn\u2019t necessarily need to take Garry down to the canvas to beat
\nhim.<\/p>\n

While Makhachev will likely have a massive advantage on the mat,
\nMendez believes the champion can win with his striking alone.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Islam] is dialed in as a striker,\u201d Mendez said on the Weighing In
\npodcast. \u201cPeople sleep on his striking, thinking that he has to
\ntake Ian down. He doesn\u2019t have to take Ian down. Is it the better
\nchoice? Probably, because we know we\u2019re the better grappler for
\nsure. But do we have to take him down? I\u2019m saying, no, we don\u2019t
\nhave to take him down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Makhachev recently admitted that he took the safest route to
\nvictory in his welterweight title win over Jack
\nDella Maddalena<\/a> as he was focused on becoming a two-division
\nchampion. The Russian recently vowed to take more risks against
\nGarry to look for a finish.<\/p>\n
