Makhachev (28-1) and Garry (17-1) square off on Aug. 15 at Xfinity
\nMobile Arena in Philadelphia, where the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> welterweight title will be on
\nthe line in the UFC
\n330<\/a> main event. The Russian champion is a massive betting
\nfavorite owing to his grappling prowess and Jones recently broke
\ndown how the Irish challenger should deal with the wrestling
\noffense coming his way.<\/p>\n

Craig Jones points out the key to handling Islam Makhachev\u2019s
\ntakedowns<\/h2>\n

In a recent video posted to the B-Team YouTube channel, Jones
\ndissected how defensive positioning is the key to stuffing
\nMakhachev\u2019s takedowns. In a technical breakdown of the matchup, the
\nAustralian focused on the champion’s single-leg entries and the
\nimportance of what happens when he gets hold of an opponent’s
\nleg.<\/p>\n

Jones claims that rather than simply wrapping up a single leg and
\ndriving forward, Makhachev can get extremely deep with his elbow,
\npulling the leg toward his body as he closes the distance with his
\nhips. While this has turned out to be unavoidable for some of the
\nformer lightweight champ\u2019s past opponents, Garry has a tendency
\nthat\u2019ll benefit him come fight night.<\/p>\n

Jones pointed to Garry’s tendency to keep his free foot on the
\ninside when defending takedowns, comparing the position to a
\ndefensive concept associated with former UFC champion B.J. Penn<\/a>. The
\npositioning can essentially turn the foot into a butterfly hook in
\ncase of a takedown.<\/p>\n

However, the position comes with risks. According to Jones, keeping
\nthe foot inside provides a stronger frame, but it also gives
\nMakhachev avenues to attack the ankle or manipulate the framing
\nleg.<\/p>\n

Notably, Jones has game-planned for Makhachev several times
\npreviously, having worked with Alexander
\nVolkanovski<\/a> and Jack
\nDella Maddalena<\/a> in preparation for the Dagestani.<\/p>\n
