\nRobertson<\/a> after drawing criticism for his comments following
\nhis pupil\u2019s failed title bid in the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Thomas, Robertson\u2019s longtime mentor, announced during the UFC
\n330<\/a> post-show that he\u2019s done cornering fighters and that he
\ntook \u201cThe Savage\u201d as far as he could. The former UFC fighter drew
\nbacklash for the timing of his remarks, with both fans and fighters
\ncalling him out.<\/p>\n

Din Thomas regrets timing of comments after Gillian Robertson\u2019s
\nUFC 330 title loss<\/h2>\n

Thomas suggested that Robertson had reached her ceiling in the
\nsport after getting thoroughly dominated by Mackenzie
\nDern<\/a>. He then claimed that he\u2019s stepping away from being a
\ncornerman, citing the fight week responsibilities, drawing the ire
\nof many. Thomas addressed the controversy on \u201cDeep Waters,\u201d
\nadmitting the timing was inappropriate.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaturday night was the most inappropriate time for me to bring up
\nthat I did not want to corner again,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cIt was
\ncompletely irresponsible; it was despicable. I shouldn\u2019t have done
\nit. I selfishly stole her moment that night. Instead of
\ncongratulating her on that run, I stole her moment and I want to
\napologize to her for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also reflected on Robertson’s early struggles and the years they
\nspent working together. He recalled the Canadian strawweight once
\nhoping simply to string together two or three consecutive victories
\nbefore eventually putting together the run that earned her a
\nchampionship opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor her, Gillian, I love you. I\u2019ve got your back\u2026 I\u2019ve always had
\nyour back,\u201d Thomas added. \u201cThis is not the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas acknowledged that coaching has been an emotional experience
\nand said he has contemplated stepping away before, but he now
\nregrets making that decision public at Robertson’s expense.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m ashamed. I\u2019m embarrassed, but I\u2019m not too big to say I\u2019m
\nsorry,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n
