Joshua
\nVan<\/a> hasn’t forgotten the night Charles
\nJohnson<\/a> handed him the first loss of his
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> career.<\/p>\n

Over two years after being stopped by Johnson, Van has gone from
\nprospect to UFC flyweight champion. The 24-year-old will return to
\nthe Octagon on Sept. 19, when he rematches former champion Alexandre
\nPantoja<\/a> in the UFC
\n331<\/a> main event at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Joshua Van details how KO loss to Charles Johnson \u2018humbled\u2019
\nhim<\/h2>\n

Van was stopped by Johnson via a third-round knockout in July 2024,
\na setback that remains the second and most recent loss of his
\nprofessional career. He has since won seven straight fights and
\ncaptured the flyweight championship from Pantoja before defending
\nit against Tatsuro
\nTaira<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Paramount+, Van explained how the defeat changed his
\napproach to training and discipline.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, for sure. I want to stay active,\u201d Van said. \u201cLike I say, that
\nloss kind of humbled me in a way. So, I never want to taste defeat
\nagain. So, my work ethic that I put in the gym is just different
\nfrom that day on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van said that he doesn’t believe he needed to completely overhaul
\nhis fighting style after the loss. Instead, he said the focus was
\non remaining himself and avoiding the mistakes that preceded the
\nJohnson bout.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing into that camp, there’s a lot of things that I did that I
\nshouldn’t have done,\u201d Van added. \u201cStuff like that, but there’s no
\nexcuse\u2026 He beat me fair and square. And it humbled me to become a
\nbetter fighter.\u201d<\/p>\n
