Javier Mendez was left stunned by Yadong
\nSong<\/a>\u2019s knockout victory against Umar
\nNurmagomedov<\/a> in their recent
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> main event clash.<\/p>\n

Mendez, who wasn\u2019t in Nurmagomedov’s corner at
\nUFC Shanghai<\/a>, revealed his immediate reaction to the finish.
\nThe veteran coach also pointed out his pupil\u2019s error before
\nreiterating his stance that the Dagestani bantamweight will
\neventually claim UFC gold.<\/p>\n

Javier Mendez explains the takedown error that left Umar
\nNurmagomedov vulnerable to Song Yadong<\/h2>\n

Mendez was shocked by Song\u2019s uppercut knockout, opening up about
\nhis raw reaction to the finish in an interview with Submission
\nRadio.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it happened, my mouth just dropped,\u201d Mendez said. \u201cI’m like,
\n\u2018What the hell happened?\u2019 And I was in shock myself because I love
\nhim so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

The
\nAmerican Kickboxing Academy<\/a> head coach then broke down what led
\nto the finish, claiming that Nurmagomedov’s head placement was
\nincorrect as he shot for a takedown.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened was just one of those things,\u201d Mendez explained.
\n\u201cSong meant to throw that uppercut, Umar did the wrong thing when
\nhe went in for the takedown and moved his head off center, and it
\njust caught him in the right spot in the equilibrium right back
\nhere. You get caught in the spot right there; it’s instant lights
\nout.\u201d<\/p>\n

The loss marked Nurmagomedov’s second professional defeat and first
\nvia knockout. Nevertheless, Mendez remains confident the Russian
\nwill win the title someday, citing how close he came against
\nMerab
\nDvalishvili<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n

“In my heart, I believe 100% [that Nurmagomedov can become
\nchampion],” Mendez said. “And unfortunately, the first time with
\nMerab, which was a great fight, came down to the last round and
\nMerab pulled it off by being great at doing what he’s doing: being
\nmore active. Umar didn’t quite do what he needed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
