Javier Mendez doesn’t agree with Dana
\nWhite<\/a>‘s assessment of Ian Garry<\/a>‘s
\nperformance against Islam
\nMakhachev<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Makhachev retained the
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> welterweight title with a
\nunanimous decision win over Garry in the UFC
\n330<\/a> main event on Aug. 15. White later criticized the Irish
\nchallenger for being too passive and overly respectful, which he
\nbelieves cost him the fight.<\/p>\n

Javier Mendez praises Ian Garry\u2019s strategy in UFC 330 loss to
\nIslam Makhachev<\/h2>\n

Mendez has a different take on Garry\u2019s strategy against Makhachev.
\nWhile he understands the UFC CEO\u2019s point of view, the
\nAmerican Kickboxing Academy<\/a> head coach commended Garry\u2019s
\napproach.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom that perspective, I get where he [Dana White] is coming from,
\nbut he doesn’t understand the mentality of a fighter and what Ian
\npulled off,\u201d Mendez said. \u201cIf he understood that, then he’d have a
\ndifferent outlook on it like I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mendez acknowledged that the fight was lackluster, but Garry\u2019s
\nstrategy still impressed him. He suggested the styles of the two
\nfighters contributed to the lack of action, with Garry relying on
\ndefensive counter-striking while Makhachev was careful not to
\noverextend himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand this more than anybody, probably, on the mental side
\nof it and what I saw from Ian was so impressive,\u201d Mendez added.
\n\u201cThe fight was somewhat lackluster. So, yeah, the Dana thing, you
\nknow, I get it, where he’s coming from. But from the mentality of a
\ncoach, where I’m coming from\u2026 Being a coach, that was genius on
\nIan’s part.\u201d<\/p>\n
