Justin Gaethje breaks down the footwork pattern he targeted
\nagainst Ilia Topuria<\/h2>\n

Speaking to UFC Hall of Famer Demetrious
\nJohnson<\/a>, Gaethje explained that Topuria’s limited footwork and
\nlack of lateral movement made him a clear target throughout the
\nfight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess the best explanation for you to understand is his feet
\nnever change rhythm,\u201d Gaethje said. \u201cHe never changes rhythm with
\nhis feet. It\u2019s forwards or backwards. So, ultimately, it\u2019s about
\ntiming his feet and interrupting. The game plan was to interrupt
\nhis feet, especially when it\u2019s so constant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gaethje also pointed to Topuria’s confidence in the buildup to the
\nfight influencing his mentality as the bout entered championship
\nrounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are emotional mistakes in preparation,\u201d Gaethje added. \u201cSo,
\nhe wasn\u2019t prepared for what happened that night. And that\u2019s his
\nfault, because he didn\u2019t think that it was possible for someone to
\nbe there with him for that long, or whatever it was; he forgot who
\nhe was and how dangerous his game is. Every fight is so individual
\nand nothing matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
