The
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> returned to the UFC Apex in Las
\nVegas for
\nUFC Vegas 121<\/a>, an entertaining event that featured nine fights
\nending inside the distance, including one by disqualification.<\/p>\n

The headliner of the event, also known as
\nUFC Fight Night 289<\/a>, saw up-and-comer Raul Rosas
\nJr.<\/a> compete in his first UFC main event against Octagon veteran
\nRaoni
\nBarcelos<\/a>. In the opening rounds, Rosas Jr. (13-1, 7-1 UFC)
\nlooked lighter on his feet and quicker with his punches. Barcelos,
\nin turn, relied on his wrestling background to take the action to
\nthe canvas. Even when put on his back, Rosas Jr. stayed active and
\nworked his way back to his feet.<\/p>\n

Still, Barcelos (22-6, 11-5 UFC) connected with hooks and short
\npunches in his unorthodox but effective style. The back-and-forth
\nexchanges continued into Round 3, when Barcelos threw \u201cEl Ni\u00f1o
\nProblema\u201d to the canvas and briefly took his back, but Rosas Jr.
\nescaped the difficult position and returned to his feet.<\/p>\n

Both fighters showed signs of fatigue entering Round 4, when the
\npace slowed. Barcelos took the action to the ground, but Rosas Jr.
\ndid all he could to stay out of serious danger. The Brazilian
\neventually took his opponent\u2019s back and went for a rear-naked
\nchoke, but Rosas Jr. resisted every submission attempt, even after
\nBarcelos locked in a body triangle.<\/p>\n

In the fifth and final round, Rosas Jr. appeared to catch a second
\nwind and stuffed his opponent\u2019s takedown attempts. Midway through
\nthe frame, Rosas Jr. landed an inside trip of his own. Barcelos
\ncrashed to the canvas and was immediately knocked out, appearing to
\nland on his head during the takedown.<\/p>\n

The official time was 1:38 of Round 5. Barcelos was immediately
\ntaken from the cage to receive medical attention. Riding a
\nsix-fight winning streak, Rosas Jr. can continue his quest to
\nbecome the youngest champion in UFC history. Paramount
\nBrazil’s Vevy Rodrigues reported that Barcelos was alert and
\ngetting checked at a local hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The co-main event featured Norma
\nDumont<\/a> and Ailin Perez<\/a>
\nin the women\u2019s bantamweight division. The pair made no secret of
\ntheir dislike for one another at the weigh-ins, and when they
\nfinally met in the Octagon, they skipped the glove touch. The
\nfight, however, ultimately failed to live up to expectations.<\/p>\n

In the opening stanza, \u201cFiona\u201d caught one of Dumont\u2019s kicks and
\ntook her opponent down, working from inside her guard. Dumont
\n(13-4, 9-4 UFC) appeared to find her rhythm in the second frame.
\nThe fight looked fairly even entering Round 3, when the fighters
\nspent most of their time working against the cage.<\/p>\n

When the dust settled, Perez was awarded a unanimous decision via
\nthree 29-28 scorecards. With her seventh straight win, Perez (14-2,
\n7-1 UFC) may have also earned a shot at the divisional championship
\nagainst the winner of the Kayla
\nHarrison<\/a>–Amanda
\nNunes<\/a> clash.<\/p>\n

Earlier on the card, Luis
\nHernandez<\/a> (9-0, 1-0 UFC) forced fellow DWCS graduate Sedriques
\nDumas<\/a> (10-6, 1 NC; 3-6, 1 NC UFC) to tap to a standing
\nguillotine choke in their 185-pound affair. A last-minute
\nreplacement for Mickey
\nGall<\/a>, \u201cThe Stache\u201d stepped confidently into the Octagon and
\n
\nearned his second win in 11 days by submitting his opponent 57
\nseconds into the fight<\/a><\/strong>. Hernandez recorded the sixth
\nsubmission of his career and has finished all nine of his
\nprofessional victories.<\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Ultimate Fighter\u201d Season 34 bantamweight final, Ilimbek
\nAkylbek Uulu<\/a> (10-3, 1-0 UFC) defeated
\nMehemmedali Osmanli<\/a> (11-2, 0-1 UFC) after his opponent
\n
\nwas disqualified for landing an illegal knee at 2:19 of Round 1
\nwhile the Kyrgyz fighter was grounded<\/a><\/strong>. Despite the
\nanticlimactic ending, Akylbek Uulu secured his fourth straight
\nvictory.<\/p>\n
