Carlos
\nPrates<\/a> isn’t hiding his anger over Islam
\nMakhachev<\/a>‘s decision to skip a proposed January
\nUltimate Fighting Championship<\/a> welterweight title defense.<\/p>\n

The Brazilian contender had hoped to challenge Makhachev for the
\nundisputed championship but will instead face Michael
\nMorales<\/a> for the interim belt at UFC
\n336<\/a> on Jan. 30, 2027, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.<\/p>\n

Carlos Prates questions Islam Makhachev’s decision to delay his
\nreturn ahead of Michael Morales interim title fight at UFC 336<\/h2>\n

Speaking on journalist Laerte Viana’s YouTube channel, Prates
\naccused Makhachev of backing out of an opportunity he had spent
\nyears working toward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve been in this game for 17 years. When it’s finally my turn to
\nlive my dream of becoming champion, the guy [Makhachev] backs out
\nlike that,\u201d Prates said. \u201cI think everybody was pissed off about
\nIslam’s decision. I was, the UFC was, the people didn’t like
\nit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prates also questioned why Makhachev would delay his next defense
\nand argued that a champion unwilling to compete should consider
\nrelinquishing the title.<\/p>\n

According to UFC CEO Dana White, Makhachev was initially expected
\nto defend in January but opted to return after Ramadan. The
\npromotion subsequently booked Prates against Morales for the
\ninterim championship, with the winner expected to challenge
\nMakhachev in a unification bout.<\/p>\n

Prates, meanwhile, is confident Morales won’t derail his
\nchampionship ambitions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have nothing against him. He’s a good kid, he wants the same
\nthing I do, but he’s going to have to wait a little because it’s my
\nturn now,\u201d Prates said.<\/p>\n
